Storytelling comprises two completely separate and unrelated stories, told against the setting of a high-school/college backdrop.
In “Fiction:” we have a senior literature class, of which Vi (Selma Blair) is a good-looking and sexually active student who is currently involved with cerebral palsy wannabe writer Marcus (Leo Fizpatrick), whom she pities. In order to improve her own writings, however: she feels the need to seek further experience elsewhere…
“Non-fiction” centers on Toby Oxman. A promising actor while at college; he is now a complete dropout and loser, who is currently working as a shoe salesman. However, he still has ambitions, and seeks to become a documentary filmmaker. As a pilot project, he chooses to exploit a dysfunctional Jewish-American family; devoting most of his attention to elder son Scoby (Mark Webber) – an anti-social, self-destructing bisexual college student, who has a vague dream of simply “becoming famous.”
At the end of it all: we can decide for ourselves just how much of either tale we think is really “fiction” and/or “non-fiction.”
Writer-director Todd Solondz presents two tales about cruelty,
deception, storytelling, and other people's suffering. In the
first, entitled 'Fiction', a student on a creative writing course
enters an abusive affair with her professor. The second,
'Nonfiction', concerns a filmmaker working on a documentary about a
high school student and his family.
