Such was its worldwide popularity after overseas release that even many months ago, it had already became the most widely pirated movie of 2009! So it is maybe strange that this South African made science-fiction landmark is being rejected by certain of its indigenous people as being "too violent."

The reasons are obvious. While the movie as a whole is a great and action-packed s/f yarn: the subtleties of the whole thing are often far too close to the truth for many "locals" to admit to - or even accept! For example: every South African has met at least one character who is identical in just about every respect to the hero Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley.) Why, the very surname of the character says it all! And the satire implied by the title alone; well...?

Watching the special effects too: one almost tends to forget that one is watching a South African movie! So just seeit, and enjoy it! For all the violence, director Neill Blomkamp has given us something that is simply great, and a film that has been highly acclaimed overseas!
Over twenty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world.

The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when a human field operative, Wikus van der Merwe, contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA.

Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable – he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology.

Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

Review This Product

Thu, 10 Dec 2009 | Review by: Carlisle Johnson

Produced on a miniscule budget compared to typical "blockbusters", this locally-shot sci fi thriller is hands-down one of the most original and exciting movies of the year. Released without much fanfare, this Peter Jackson production proved to be a huge hit in international theatres, and it's easy to see why. Dazzling special effects, characters you actually care about, and a gripping edge-of-your-seat storyline, all combine in perfect unison. And spotting well-known local celebs in cameo roles also adds to the fun. One of the year's best movies.

More than just a Sci-fi Aliens vs Humans action movie, has a fantastic story below what you see. It's been sometime since I've enjoyed watching a movie so much. Definitely blows Hollywood out of the water. I need this for my movie collection.
