How To Lose Friends & Alienate people (DVD)

This "fish out of water" comedy is set in the cut-throat world of celebrity reporters, a world where journalists can make or break any rising star or living legend, and they do it with a salacious comment here and a misleading headline there. And it's this world in which small-time British journalist Sidney Young finds himself.

Sidney though doesn't play by the usual rules of pandering to stars' egos and his truly "British" mannerisms of total honesty and gregarious wit soon come to the fore leading to many comic mishaps as he has to try to adapt the American celebrity way of life.

Pegg ensures that this is not your usual Americanized comedy, and the lessons to be learnt are as much for him and for his new colleagues as it soon beomes evident that conformity is nothing more than "selling out".

The laughs are frequent and the performances are able, but ultimately the movie conforms to the very notions that it satirizes and morphs into a standard fluffy rom-com formula by the end. Still watchable though. (3 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson).

Sidney Young is a gate-crashing British journalist who loves exposing the shallowness of the celebrity world, yet desperately wants to join it.

When he accepts an offer from renowned editor Clayton Harding to write for an ultra-chic magazine in Manhattan, Sidney finally gets to rub elbows with A-list celebrities but always manages to rub them the wrong way.

His fellow writer, Alison Olsen, is powerless to stop Sidney when he sets his lustful sites on beautiful starlet Sophie Maes. But when Sophie's publicist makes him a tempting offer, Sidney is finally poised to conquer the Big Apple or suffer the biggest humiliation of his life.
