This satirical science-fiction nightmare - the cinema adaptation of Anthony Burges's 1962 novel of the same name - was legendary Stanley Kubrick's first movie following his trail-breaking 1968 s-f masterpiece, 2001 - A Space Odyssey. On its release in 1971, the film was considered unduly violent, and banned - even in Britain - for over a decade. It follows, then, that it took even longer for the picture to reach South Africa. In his contract with Warner Bros, Kubrick had a special clause written in, in which he stipulated that if the movie was to be shown at all, it must be completely intact and without any cuts whatsoever - something that did not find favour with the South African Publications Board of some forty years ago! So it's initial release was limited to "art-house" cinemas...and with a "No Persons Under 23" age restriction.

Even judged by today's standards, it is still a very violent film; though the violence - particularly in the slow-motion sequences - come across as being almost of a balletic nature - similar to some of the graphic gun-play scenes in Sam Peckinpah's controversial western, The Wild Bunch, of some years back. But in this one, there are some moral issues to deal with too... and Kubrick makes no bones about the fact that even high-profile political icons are not above corruption! (So what else is new?)

For the background musical score: in 2001, Kubrick turned to the works of both Johann Strauss and his cousin, Richard Strauss. Here, he favours Ludwig von Beethoven's compositions, with an occasional nod to Rossini as well - all perfect for showcasing the newly developed Dolby sound system; this being the first movie ever to feature the now-commonplace technical advancement.

Verdict: an always-controversial masterpiece that you'll either love or loathe - as with much of Stanley Kubrick's cinematic output. Me, I LOVE it!
In a futuristic Britain, a gang of teenagers go on the rampage every night, beating and raping helpless victims. After one of the boys quells an uprising in the gang, they knock him out and leave him for the police to find. He agrees to try "aversion therapy" to shorten his jail sentence. When he is eventually let out, he hates violence, but the rest of his gang members are still after him.
