Stephen King’s bestselling unsolved mystery, THE COLORADO KID – inspiration for the TV series HAVEN -- returns to bookstores for the first time in 10 years in an all-new illustrated edition.

On an island off the coast of Maine, a man is found dead. There’s no identification on the body. Only the dogged work of a pair of local newspapermen and a graduate student in forensics turns up any clues, and it’s more than a year before the man is identified. And that’s just the beginning of the mystery. Because the more they learn about the man and the baffling circumstances of his death, the less they understand. Was it an impossible crime? Or something stranger still...? No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammett’s THE MALTESE FALCON and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world’s great storytellers presents a moving and surprising tale whose subject is nothing less than the nature of mystery itself...

A clever and well written mini mystery, but nowhere near King’s best work On the small island of Moose Lookit off the coast of Maine, an unidentified man is found dead on the beach. The police have no leads but the hard work of Dave and Vince, two local reporters, and a forensic science intern unearth a few clues about his identity. However, the more the town learns about the man nicknamed ‘The Colorado Kid’, the more impossible the circumstances of his demise seem. This was a well-written novella with an unusual structure that diverts from the normal ‘murder mystery’ trope. The story of the ‘Kid’ is told to the reader via Vince and Dave, as they recount the mystery to their young, eager intern Steffi. These three main characters are richly textured and likeable, despite the short length of time the story has to introduce them to us, and the almost ‘old married couple’ nature of the two elderly reporters’ relationship is very well presented. The landscape of Moose Lookit is also very atmospheric and the imagery is very bold and vivid. As a huge fan of Stephen King’s writing, I have to say that whilst this was an enjoyable and readable story, it was not as gripping or memorable as some of his absolute classics. Some readers may find the odd story structure and lack of closure frustrating and unfulfilling, which I admit I did a little. It is also quite a short book and therefore doesn’t delve into as much detail or contain as many clever plotlines as King’s other work. It also lacked any particular twists but again, the length of it meant they would have been unlikely to work. Overall, whilst this was no way near as good as some of King’s classics, ‘The Colorado King’ was still an enjoyable novella that made for an entertaining read. It is unusual and interesting, and definitely worth the short reading time. Daenerys Breakaway Reviewers received a copy of this book to review.
