War Of The Worlds (DVD)

As with the classic 1953 movie version of H G Wells's celebrated story: the setting has once again been transposed from London to the USA. But here' the Martian machines are presented, as in the book, as walking tripods, and not flame-throwing flying saucers that the Pal version projected. These tripods emit a terrifying low-register bellow - rather like a large foghorn being played through a microphone and amplified many times.

Yes, the special effects are incredible... which is whatwe've come to expect from a Steven Spielberg movie. Similarly, the story is shown largely through the eyes of Rachel (Dakota Fanning) and Robbie (Justin Chadwin); the children of the hero, Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise).

While Mr. Cruise received nothing but raspberries for his performance here, full acting honours must go to Tim Robbins, as eccentric Harlan Oglivy - in whose basement the children try to hide while the evil Martian machines are lurking nearby. And credit must also be given to Gene Barry and Ann Robinson - who played the leads in the 1953 movie, and appear here only in the final scene, as the childrens' grandparents in New York.

The voice we hear narrating the introduction is unmistakably that of Morgan Freeman.
