Pride (DVD)

This true sports story is formula-written and therefore predictable, but it's made with real feeling that shines through, none the less.

Deep-voiced and slowly-spoken swimming coach Jim Ellis (Terrance Howard,) having just been turned down by a local (white) Philadelphia high school, wanders into the Marcus Foster Recreation Centre. It is simply a junky playground of trashed dreams, but it does have a swimming pool, though the young teenagers there seem far more interested in the netless hoops on the shabby basketball court. And it is here, during the very early 1970s, that Jim starts laying the foundations for what was soon to become the highly successful Philadelphia Department of Recreation swimming team, having only ghetto kids to work with.
To most of these youngsters: competitive swimming becomes the first thing they have even known to give them any sense of pride! Despite strong opposition from some of the expensive Ivy League colleges in the area, they soon prove their metal - both as sportsmen as well as simply winners.

This is definitely the kind of "success" movie that America makes best, and the unknown cast puts in some credible acting. The photography is great as well.

Verdict: a pretty good movie.

The determined Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard) starts a swim team for troubled teens at the Philadelphia Department of Recreation. Throughout their struggles, in or out of the swimming pool, Jim embraces and mentors the kids, hoping to help them become successful at swimming and in all aspects of their lives.
