Now entering its seventeenth year, the Caine Prize for African
Writing is Africa’s leading literary prize, and is awarded to a
short story by an African writer published in English, whether
residing in Africa or elsewhere. This collection brings together
the five 2016 shortlisted stories, along with stories written at
the Caine Prize Writers’ Workshop, which took place in April 2016.
Short Listed Stories: Memories We Lost by Lidudumalingani Mqombothi
(South Africa), The Lifebloom Gift by Abdul Adan (Somalia/Kenya),
What it Means When a Man Falls from the Sky by Lesley Nneka Arimah
(Nigeria), Genesis by Tope Folarin (Nigeria), At your Requiem by
Bongani Kona (Zimbabwe). The leading African literary award is also
known as the African Booker, as it is named after the Booker Prize
founder, Michael Caine. The collection of 18 short-stories will be
released in time for the announcement of the award in July 2016 in
London. The two African winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature,
Wole Soyinka and John Coetzee are patrons of The Caine Prize.
