One of Walt Disney’s many underrated and nearly forgotten feature-length animated films: this was the 18th (and last) to be released actually during his lifetime. It deals with the young King Arthur legend in a way that you certainly won’t find in any of the history books!
Impatient after centuries of waiting for the right man to arrive and pull the legendary sword Excalibur from the anvil – thus claiming the English throne – the people agree to hold a New Year’s jousting tournament...with the champion to be crowned as the new king of the land. Young Arthur – better known as “Wart” – arrives in London together with his stepfather Sir Hector, and his stepbrother Kay. Also accompanying them are Wart’s tutor, Merlin, who owns a tame owl named Archimedes.
The voice casting for ‘Archimedes’ is of particular interest. Disney heard Junius Matthews do the vocal work for a potato character on a TV commercial. He reckoned that anybody who could talk like a potato could talk like an owl – and signed him up for the role without any further audition!
A sword mysteriously embedded in a massive stone offers this challenge: Whoever can pull it from the stone will become the King of England! Many try to remove the sword and fail, and for an awkward young squire-in-training, the quest seems ludicrous.
But with help from a powerful wizard, Merlin, the young man learns that with persistence and belief in himself, even the most incredible dream can be realised.
