The third book in Theresa Breslin's enthralling Dream Master series
will have her young readers on the edge of their seats. Her hero,
Cy, is once again transported back in time with the help of the
Dream Master - after his earlier adventures in Ancient Egypt and
fighting off Vikings, this novel finds him in Pompeii, with
Vesuvius on the brink of eruption. Action-packed and full of
fascinating detail about life in Pompeii, Gladiator is also bang up
to the minute. Breslin skilfully combines her historical expertise
with a modern story encompassing a hormone-riddled teenage sister,
a pair of school bullies and a young asylum seeker. The result is a
modern fantasy which rockets along at a cracking pace, full of sly
literary references. The Dream Master himself is a curmudgeonly
little fellow with a fine line in alliteration, but he nevertheless
always manages to haul Cy out of trouble by the skin of his teeth.
Can he do the same this time? Cy is working on a school project
about volcanoes when his vivid imagination comes into play again
and he and the Dream Maker find themselves back in Pompeii. They're
in a bit of a predicament - the Dream Master has been captured and
is due to face a lion in the Amphitheatre, and Cy has returned to
Pompeii as a slave. Meanwhile, Vesuvius is rumbling away, and it is
only a matter of hours before it is due to erupt. But it is not
only the Dream Master whose life is in danger; Cy has become firm
friends with his young master, Linus, and his sister, Rhea Silvia.
He knows he can't change the course of history, but can he mount a
daring rescue bid with the Dream Master's help and get them all
away from Pompeii before the volcano erupts? Ages 8-12 (Kirkus UK)
Cy has the ability to control his own dreams and knows his own, personal Dream Master. But sometimes Cy's own imagination is so strong that he can run his own dream. Or so he thinks. For there's plenty of mishap and adventure ahead when Cy and the Dream Master travel back to Pompeii - on the eve of the eruption of Vesuvius. Not only does the Dream Master have to face a lion in the gladiatorial ring, but Cy must rescue him - and drive a chariot to escape from the volanic lava and dust...
