Based on the popular series of books by Lee Child, Jack Reacher is the main character who has no steady address, no ties emotionally to anyone, and basically drifts from town to town trying to ensure justice for whoever he can help.
This adaptation is based on the 9th book in the series One Shot, and having never read any of the books I can't make any direct comparisons whether "for" or "against". But as a movie on its own grounds, I highly recommend it!
A sniper kills 5 random people in the midday lunch hustle-and-bustle of Philadelphia. The police investigate and manage to capture their suspect. But we as the audience, having seen who committed the crime, knows that the suspect is innocent. Through some clever backstory, Jack Reacher finds himself on the case, trying to prove the man's innocence while at the same time trying to find the proper person responsible.
The plot sounds straight-forward, but I was extremely surprised. I was expecting a typically outrageous "Tom Cruise-action movie", but instead Jack Reacher proves to be a highly thrilling and unpredictable murder mystery. There are a couple of action scenes, but they display minimum gloss and effects while delivering maximum impact!
The actors are all more than capable, Cruise and Pike going to toe-to-toe with great chemistry, then Cruise and Duvall managing to top even that! And special mention must be made of famed director Werner Herzog, who steps in front of the camera this time to play a real nasty piece of work, and he does a real impressive job. The storyline really keeps you guessing, and that's the movie's greatest achievement considering we know who the actual bad guys are within the first 20 minutes. It's the "WHY?" and the "HOW?" which help to propel this film to a rollicking movie adventure! (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
