Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal star in this thriller adapted from Austin Wright's novel. Years after leaving her first husband, Susan Morrow (Adams) receives a letter asking her to read the manuscript of his first novel. Although worried that reading the book may unearth unpleasant memories long forgotten, Susan reluctantly begins to read.

His story revolves around Tony Hastings (Gyllenhaal) and his family as their summer holiday to a cottage retreat turns violent following a confrontation with a mysterious man. As Susan reads on, she becomes convinced that the book is a veiled threat from her ex-husband and is forced to confront some dark truths about her past. The cast also includes Isla Fisher, Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Armie Hammer.

Director Ton Ford's Failure.

Sat, 29 Aug 2020 | Review by: Michael S.

Though superb in his direction of A Single Man, Tom Ford fails here. There are some good performances, especially Shannon and the two juicy crooks, but the two leads are strikingly poor. Gyllenhaal, usually nuanced and convincing, is too often way over the top here. And the dregs of the movie are whenever Amy Adams is on screen. I have never seen why some people consider her a great actress, but haven't seen a worse performance in the last 200 films I have viewed. Its a badly written role, but she sleep-walks through, like a constipated zombiem reading a book, with her glasses on or occasionally, for excitement, off. Her face is passive and slightly nauseated, and she makes it impossible to care about her uncaring and unpleasant character. A fairly interesting failure, if you like that sort of thing, it's the sort of thing you might like.
