Romantic comedy drama directed and co-written by Tom Hanks, who
also stars in the title role. When middle-aged businessman Larry
Crowne (Hanks) loses his job as the result of a corporate
downsizing, he decides to go back to college in an attempt to find
a new direction and jump-start his stalled life. There he bonds
with his scooter-riding fellow students and develops a crush on his
teacher Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), discovering along the way
that letting go of something good can sometimes make way for
something better.

LARRY CROWNE

Noting from the opening credits that this picture not only starred Tom Hanks, but that he also co-pRoduced, directed and co-wrote the screenplay: I anticipated a movie of complete boring mega-self-indulgence! To my delight, however, I found it to be a wonderful romantic comedy! In fact, I rate it one of the most entertaining pictures I have seen so far his year! So don't be put off by the offbeat “give away nothing” title.
Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks), a middle-aged Navy veteran, is fired from his job at a big-box store, despite his seniority and satisfactory work, The company has decided that his lack of a college education impedes any chance of advancement. Larry, who is divorced and lives alone, cannot find a job elsewhere and could lose his house. and his large truck – his only personal means of transport. His neighour. Lamar (Cedric the Entertainer) suggests his going to enroll at the neighbourhood community college and speak wih the Dean about the courses best suited for him. So he does just that and two of his major subjects are speech and writing. His lecturer in both is Mrs Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts) – who is very unhappy in her marriage, and therefore dRinks a lot at home! If you hang onto these thoughts, I won't have to draw a picture for you as to where the plot for the rest of the picture is headed! Mind you, its not all plain sailing...
The comedic acting and timing on the part of the two leads is exceptionally good, though its George Takei, who plays Dr. Ed Matsutani – Larry's Economics professor – who really steals the show. His teaching method of blending sarcasm with economics seems abrasive...but is really most effective!
Footnote: I cannot understand why the film fared so badly at the box-office. Personally, I think its great!!
