Texas-born Tommy Lee Jones has been around for quite a while now; his first movie being Love Story in which he had a small role back in 1970. However, it wasn't until he received his "Best Actor" Oscar for The Fugitive that audiences began to sit up and take notice of him. In this engrossing drama-fantasy, he plays Dave Robicheaux: a Sherrif's detective who is investigating the murder of a young woman. Oh yes, and Dave also has a drinking problem! In fact he has hallucinations about General Hood - a long-time-dead Confederate civil war commander. By coincidence, Hollywood stars Elrod Sykes (Peter Sarsgaard) and his girlfriend Kelly Drummond (Kelly Macdonald) are in town to make a Civil War film. Dave arrests Elwood an a suspicion of drunken driving, and in trying to avoid the charge, Elrod tells him of of a decayed corpse that he and Kelly had found in the swamp.
The clues in Dave's murder case seem to point to his one-time friend, Julie "Baby Feet" Balboni (a good dramatic performance by John Goodman) whose ties with the mafia had caused Dave and him to drift apart and become enemies.
Others in the cast include Mary Steenbergen as Dave's wife Bootsie; and Ned Beatty as Twinky LaMoyne - who is also not above suspicion of the murder.
All in all, it is a very satisfying and well-crafted picture - but not for the literal-minded!
Gritty American deep south murder mystery starring Tommy Lee Jones.
After being stopped for drink-driving, Hollywood star Elrod Sykes
(Peter Sarsgaard) and his girlfriend Kelly Drummond (Kelly
Macdonald), both in town to film a Civil War epic, tell local
detective Dave Robicheaux (Tommy Lee Jones) about a corpse they
discovered back in the swamp. Triggering memories of a murder he
witnessed when he was a child, Robicheaux's investigations appear
to tie-in with a spate of recent murders involving young women,
pointing to the involvement of local crimelord Julius 'Baby Feet'
Balboni (John Goodman). But as Robicheaux sets out uncover the
killer's identity, he soon finds himself caught up in a game of cat
and mouse through the waterways of the Louisiana swamps.
