This lavish historical epic was nominated for 5 Oscars and features outstanding performances from two brilliant actresses, Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson as well as a wonderful supporting cast headed by Trevor Howard, lan Holm, Nigel Davenport and Patrick McGoohan.

On the death of her mother, the Catholic Mary Stuart claims the throne of Scotland and in doing so makes a dangerous enemy of her Protestant cousin Elizabeth, the 'Virgin Queen' who sits on the English throne. Political intrigue, betrayals and murderous conspiracies abound as the cousins, opposing religious factions, power hungry advisors and Mary's own scheming, Protestant half brother James all become embroiled in an unrelenting struggle to rule Britain.
