Tony Palmer directs this dramatisation of the tragic relationship between composer Giacomo Puccini and the maid who became his lover, Doria Manfredi - an ill-fated union that went on to inspire the opera 'Turandot'. Robert Stephens and Virginia McKenna star. The drama is juxtaposed with footage from Palmer's 1984 production of 'Turandot' for the Scottish National Opera, starring Linda Evans Gray, Willard White and Alan Opie.
