A most amusing 87-minute animated screen adaptation of the Roald Dahl book of the same name, the background voices here are those of such luminaries as George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray and Willem Dafoe among others. An interesting feature is that director Wes Anderson chose to record these voices outside rather than in a studio: "in order to gain greater spontaneity."
Actually, it is a very funny film indeed... though maybe not so for young children. By this, I don't mean that it is intended almost solely for adults - as was the animated British classic Watership Down of several years back. Rather, it's that while I (and many other adults I know) laughed uproariously right the way through, it is dubious whether even younger teenagers would be switched on by the rather off-beat humour with which we're presented.
Basically, the story is about a reformed Mr Fox (George Clooney); his wife Felicity (Meryl Streep), and their surly young son, Ash (Jason Schwartrzman), who decide to move from their traditional hole in the ground to a better home at the base of a tree - despite advice to the contrary from Fox's lawyer, Clive Badger (Bill Murray). This new home is roughly in the centre of a triangle amongst three prolific poultry farmers... and Mr Fox, understandably, begins to revert back to his old ways!
Naturally the good guys have to win in the end - although easilly the most memorable and scene-stealing character is a bad guy, in the form of Rat; voiced by Willem Dafoe. Still, if you can get away with being The Green Goblin in a Spiderman epic... well, why not?
Mr. and Mrs. Fox live an idyllic home life with their son Ash and visiting young nephew Kristopherson. But after 12 years, the bucolic existence proves too much for Mr Fox’s wild animal instincts.
Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief and in doing so, endangers not only his beloved family, but the whole animal community.
Trapped underground and with not enough food to go around, the animals band together to fight against the evil Farmers - Boggis, Bunce and Bean - who are determined to capture the audacious, fantastic Mr. Fox at any cost.
