The Observologist is a highly illustrated, playful field guide for
budding natural scientists and curious observers of the world right
under our noses. An observologist is someone who makes scientific
expeditions, albeit very small ones, every day. They notice
interesting details in the world around them. They are expert at
finding tiny creatures, plants, and fungi. An observologist knows
that there are extraordinary things to be found in even the most
ordinary places. The Observologist puts more than 100 small
creatures and features of the natural world under the microscope,
but this is no everyday catalog. It is an antidote to boredom, an
invitation out of the digital world to observe our environment with
care and curiosity wherever we are. Facts combine with comics,
detailed illustrations, science, and funny stories in this unique,
warm, and fascinating account of the small things all around us.
Through Clarkson's unique sensibility, you'll find that once you
start thinking small, there's no limit to what you can
notice--right under your nose.

This collection presents papers from a symposium on extraction of
rare metals as well as rare extraction processing techniques used
in metal production. It covers metals essential for critical modern
technologies including electronics, electric motors, generators,
energy storage systems, and specialty alloys. Rare metals are the
main building blocks of many emerging critical technologies and
have been receiving significant attention in recent years. Much
research in academia and industry is devoted to finding novel
techniques to extract critical and rare metals from primary and
secondary sources. The technologies that rely on critical metals
are dominating the world, and finding a way to extract and supply
them effectively is highly desirable and beneficial. Rapid
development of these technologies entails fast advancement of the
resource and processing industry for their building materials.
Authors from academia and industry exchange knowledge on
developing, operating, and advancing extractive and processing
technologies. Contributions cover rare-earth elements (magnets,
catalysts, phosphors, and others), energy storage materials
(lithium, cobalt, vanadium, graphite), alloy elements (scandium,
niobium, titanium), and materials for electronics (gallium,
germanium, indium, gold, silver). The contributions also cover
various processing techniques in mineral beneficiation,
hydrometallurgy, separation and purification, pyrometallurgy,
electrometallurgy, supercritical fluid extraction, and recycling
(batteries, magnets, electrical and electronic equipment).

A sweeping retrospective exploring the oeuvre of an incandescent
artist, revealing the ways that Mitchell expanded painting beyond
Abstract Expressionism as well as the transatlantic contexts that
shaped her Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) was fearless in her
experimentation, creating works of unparalleled beauty, strength,
and emotional intensity. This gorgeous book unfolds the story of an
artistic master of the highest order, revealing the ways she
expanded abstract painting and illuminating the transatlantic
contexts that shaped her. Lavish illustrations cover the full arc
of her artistic practice, from her exceptional New York paintings
of the early 1950s to the majestic multipanel compositions she made
in France later in her career. Signature works are represented here
along with rarely seen paintings, works on paper, artist's
sketchbooks, and photographs of Mitchell's life, social circle, and
surroundings. Featuring scholarly texts, in-depth essays, and

The Clinical Thinking of W. R. Bion in Brazil is comprised of
thirteen transcriptions of supervisions Wilfred Bion conducted
during his three teaching and speaking tours of Brazil. During
these tours, Bion conducted over 130 public supervisions of
analytic cases in English in which he explained his theories and
illustrated their clinical application. Following on from the first
volume, Bion in Brazil: Supervisions and Commentaries (2017), this
book presents each supervision in full, with an accompanying
commentary written by a senior Brazilian psychoanalyst and Bionian
scholar. Arguably, no psychoanalyst has had as much impact on
psychoanalytic development in Brazil than Bion, and this collection
of his seminars, presented here for the first time, acts as a
historical document and testament to his legacy in contemporary
analysis. The Clinical Thinking of W. R. Bion in Brazil provides a
unique opportunity for contemporary psychoanalysts, candidates, and
students to hear the distinctive ‘voice’ of Bion, observe how
he listens in conversation and learn how he would intervene in and
interpret a clinical situation.
This collection of essays interrogates how human rights law and
practice acquire meaning in relation to legal pluralism, ie, the
co-existence of more than one regulatory order in a same social
field. As a social phenomenon, legal pluralism exists in all
societies. As a legal construction, it is characteristic of
particular regions, such as post-colonial contexts. Drawing on
experiences from Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, the
contributions in this volume analyse how different configurations
of legal pluralism interplay with the legal and the social life of
human rights. At the same time, they enquire into how human rights
law and practice influence interactions that are subject to
regulation by more than one normative regime. Aware of numerous
misunderstandings and of the mutual suspicion that tends to exist
between human rights scholars and anthropologists, the volume
includes contributions from experts in both disciplines and intends
to build bridges between normative and empirical theory.
Gisele Aubin, a driven professional in her field was more often
on airplanes than home. Always on the run, she left no time for a
life. Her most faithful companion was her BlackBerry, and she had
started thinking about dumping it. When the company she works for
was sold, Gisele knew the time had come to make the changes she
needed. At that point, jumping off the corporate ladder seemed to
be her best way out.But when Gisele made her landing, she realized
that her challenges were not those she had expected. She had no
idea what to do next.In this memoir, author Gisele Aubin shares her
experience of turning her career around in order to create a more
fulfilling life. Building on the knowledge gained through her
experiences, Gisele provides an insight into what to expect when
creating the successful change needed in your life. And it's not
what you think. Her message is that change is incremental and
manageable if you are willing to take it one day at a time, let go
of who you think you ought to be, and become the person you truly
are.
"Ending violent conflict requires societies to take leaps of
political imagination. Artistic communities are often uniquely
placed to help promote new thinking by enabling people to see
things differently. In place of conflict's binary divisions,
artists are often charged with exploring the ambiguities and
possibilities of the excluded middle. Yet, their role in
peacebuilding remains little explored. This excellent and
agenda-setting volume provides a ground-breaking look at a range of
artistic practices, and the ways in which they have attempted to
support peacebuilding - a must-read for all practitioners and
policy-makers, and indeed other peacemakers looking for
inspiration."Professor Christine Bell, FBA, Professor of
Constitutional Law, Assistant Principal (Global Justice), and
co-director of the Global Justice Academy, The University of
Edinburgh, UK "Peacebuilding and the Arts offers an impressive and
impressively comprehensive engagement with the role that visual
art, music, literature, film and theatre play in building peaceful
and just societies. Without idealizing the role of the arts, the
authors explore their potential and limits in a wide range of
cases, from Korea, Cambodia, Colombia and Northern Ireland to
Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa and Israel-Palestine."Roland Bleiker,
Professor of International Relations, University of Queensland,
Australia, and author of Aesthetics and World Politics and Visual
Global Politics "Peacebuilding and the Arts is the first
publication to focus critically and comprehensively on the
relations between the creative arts and peacebuilding, expanding
the conventional boundaries of peacebuilding and conflict
transformation to include the artist, actor, poet, novelist,
dramatist, musician, dancer and film director. The sections on the
visual arts, music, literature, film and theatre, include case
studies from very different cultures, contexts and settings but a
central theme is that the creative arts can play a unique and
crucial role in the building of peaceful and just societies, with
the power to transform relationships, heal wounds, and nurture
compassion and empathy. Peacebuilding and the Arts is a vital and
unique resource which will stimulate critical discussion and
further research, but it will also help to refine and reframe our
understanding of peacebuilding. While it will undoubtedly become
mandatory reading for students of peacebuilding and the arts, its
original approach and dynamic exploratory style should attract a
much wider interdisciplinary audience."Professor Anna King,
Professor of Religious Studies and Social Anthropology and Director
of Research, Centre of Religion, Reconciliation and Peace (WCRRP),
University of Winchester, UK This volume explores the relationship
between peacebuilding and the arts. Through a series of original
essays, authors consider some of the ways that different art forms
(including film, theatre, music, literature, dance, and other forms
of visual art) can contribute to the processes and practices of
building peace. This book breaks new ground, by setting out fresh
ways of analysing the relationship between peacebuilding and the
arts. Divided into five sections on the Visual Arts, Music,
Literature, Film and Theatre/Dance, over 20 authors offer
conceptual overviews of each art form as well as new case studies
from around the globe and critical reflections on how the arts can
contribute to peacebuilding. As interest in the topic increases, no
other book approaches this complex relationship in the way that
Peacebuilding and the Arts does. By bringing together the insights
of scholars and practitioners working at the intersection of the
arts and peacebuilding, this book develops a series of unique,
critical perspectives on the interaction of diverse art forms with
a range of peacebuilding endeavours.
