This open access book presents a ground-breaking approach to developing micro-foundations for demography and migration studies. It offers a unique and novel methodology for creating empirically grounded agent-based models of international migration - one of the most uncertain population processes and a top-priority policy area. The book discusses in detail the process of building a simulation model of migration, based on a population of intelligent, cognitive agents, their networks and institutions, all interacting with one another. The proposed model-based approach integrates behavioural and social theory with formal modelling, by embedding the interdisciplinary modelling process within a wider inductive framework based on the Bayesian statistical reasoning. Principles of uncertainty quantification are used to devise innovative computer-based simulations, and to learn about modelling the simulated individuals and the way they make decisions. The identified knowledge gaps are subsequently filled with information from dedicated laboratory experiments on cognitive aspects of human decision-making under uncertainty. In this way, the models are built iteratively, from the bottom up, filling an important epistemological gap in migration studies, and social sciences more broadly.

Language in Text and Discourse is an innovative state-of-the-art interdisciplinary series of monographs and edited collections that focus on cutting-edge linguistic studies at the interface between discourse and society including corpus approaches. This series is a forum for studies of language in interaction with other semiotic modes which address the question of how meanings are activated, remade or re-shaped within a variety of contexts and interactions, such as social or textual structures, places, styles, or discursive moments. These are considered to be resources for placemaking or positioning, which correlate and are indexically linked with repetitive semiotic patterns. Verbal and non-verbal positioning as well as conventionalised forms of patterning determine, construe and reflect historically variable concepts of social reality. These are part of a complex network of discursive realities, power relations and voices. The series incorporates studies of social styling and language usage as well as processes of position-ing in a number of different linguistic as well as social, cultural, aesthetic and historical contexts. By transcending disciplinary boundaries the series is integrative in a number of ways. We will publish linguistic studies written in English or German about grammatical, knowledge-oriented, stylistic and sociolinguistic approaches within the fields of discourse analy-sis or corpus linguistics. These studies com-bine quantitative and qualitative investigations or represent mono- or multi-modal analyses. All submissions will be peer-reviewed.

Diskursanalytische Arbeiten gehoren in jungerer Zeit zu den wichtigsten Impulsen in der gesellschafts- und wissensorientierten Linguistik. Zwei Auspragungen der Diskurslinguistik werden haufig gegenubergestellt: kritische und deskriptive Diskursanalyse. Geht es den deskriptiven Ansatzen um eine Rekonstruktion historischer Bedeutungen und die Freilegung gesellschaftsrelevanter Themen in offentlichen Debatten, so verfolgen kritische Arbeiten vor allem das Ziel einer Analyse von Sprache und Macht. Der Band hinterfragt die Betonung dieses Gegensatzes und reflektiert Gemeinsamkeiten sowie Unterschiede beider Zugange. Eine Abgrenzung erweist sich dabei als wenig sachbezogen, vielmehr als strategisch motiviert. Hans-Georg Gadamer is one of the leading philosophers in the world today. Since the publication in 1960 of his magnum opus "Truth and Method, " his philosophical hermeneutics has been the focus of a great deal of attention and controversy. His ideas have been applied to questions of interpretation in the study of art and literature, to issues of knowledge and objectivity in the social sciences, to related disputes in theology and jurisprudence, and even to reevaluations of philosophy itself.

This book is a systematic introduction to Gadamer's work, presented with a clarity of exposition and argument that makes it rewarding to non-philosophers and philosophers alike. It is constructed around a series of debates on historicism, authorial intention, subjectivism, ideology, and the "New Pragmatism, " and it pays particular attention to how Gadamer's work has been interpreted and criticized by such philosophers as Hirsch, Habermas, Apel, and Rorty. Die Diskurslinguistik hat sich mittlerweile als Teildisziplin der Sprachwissenschaft, die sich mit textubergreifenden Bedeutungsbezugen und historisch-kulturell verankertem Wissen befasst, und als auf Sprache spezialisierte Subdisziplin im multidisziplinaren Projekt "Diskursanalyse" etabliert. Wahrend die theoretische Reflexion des Diskursbegriffes weit vorangeschritten ist und zahlreiche Einzeluntersuchungen vorliegen, fehlt es noch immer an einer fundierten Methodik und Methodologie, an Verfahren, die wissenschaftlichen Kriterien wie Validitat und Reliabilitat standhalten und gleichzeitig der komplexen Diskursmorphologie gerecht werden. Diesem Desiderat tritt der Band entgegen. Die Beitrage stellen verschiedene Methoden vor, exemplifizieren sie und diskutieren ihre Applizierbarkeit auf so unterschiedliche diskurslinguistische Gegenstandsbereiche wie Episteme und Schemata, Aussagen und Argumentationen, Subjekt und Kollektiv, Multimodalitat und Interaktivitat, Ideologie und Macht sowie Korpus und Muster. 1884/85 tritt Deutschland in den Kreis der Kolonialmachte, auch wenn es in Bedeutung und faktischer Macht weit hinter den grossen Kolonialmachten der Zeit zuruckliegt. Der Band befasst sich mit der sprachlich vermittelten kolonisatorischen Identitat im deutschen Kaiserreich aus sprachgeschichtlicher und diskursanalytischer Perspektive. Die Bildung der kolonisatorischen Identitat ist von der Pragung bestimmter Kommunikationsformen nicht zu trennen. Vor allem durch sprachliches Handeln in ahnlichen Mustern mit ubereinstimmenden Themen bildet sich eine gemeinschaftlich erfahrene Gleichheit. Die diskursive, ideologische und phantasierte Identitat als Kolonialmacht zeigt sich daher als gewichtiges Inhaltsfeld der nationalen Kommunikation zwischen 1884/85 und 1919. Der Sammelband ist als grundlegender Beitrag zur Sprachgeschichte des deutschen Kolonialismus konzipiert. Das linguistische Interesse richtet sich dabei in bewusster Erganzung literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Arbeiten zum Kolonialismus auf Alltagsschrifttum. In der Alltagskommunikation sind die Kontextualisierungszusammenhange des Kolonialismus am deutlichsten markiert, hier sind spezifisch historische Sinnzusammenhange erkennbar, in denen Texten Bedeutung zugeschrieben wird.

Die Frage, welches die historischen Bedingungen des standardisierten und uberregional verwendbaren Neuhochdeutschen sind, gehort zu den zentralen Themen der deutschen Sprachgeschichte. Ausgehend von einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit den bisherigen Erklarungsansatzen wird in diesem Buch die funktionale Differenzierung von Sprache als Bedingung der Moglichkeit anderer Standardisierungsprozesse behandelt. Damit wird das sprachgeographische Paradigma zugunsten einer diskurs- und textanalytischen Sichtweise in Frage gestellt. Die theoretischen Positionen des Buches werden in einer Untersuchung zur Funktionsdifferenzierung des juridischen Diskurses von 1200 bis 1800 untermauert. Es wird deutlich, dass die Textvorkommen in allen relevanten Rechtskreisen uber intertextuelle Bezuge funktional hochgradig differenzierend wirken.
