Corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility,
corporate citizenship and corporate reputation are without a doubt
'hot topics' for today's business. "The Sustainability Effect"
offers a unique, practical and refreshing perspective on this
debate. Drawing on research conducted with some of the world's
largest 500 companies, Arlo Kristjan O'Brady takes a detailed look
at corporate sustainability and corporate reputation management,
focusing on establishing the potential impact (positive and
negative) that sustainability issues can have on the reputation of
large multinational corporations.
Examining the funerary elegy in the context of early modern
funerary ritual, this book also analyzes the political, aesthetic,
moral, and religious developments in the period 1606-1660 and
discusses the works of Donne, Jonson, Milton and Early Modern
women's writing. Brady discusses both death and the body, combining
literary theory, social and cultural history, psychology and
anthropology to produce exciting and original readings of neglected
source material.
This book studies the connections between the political reform of
the Holy Roman Empire and the German lands around 1500 and the
sixteenth-century religious reformations, both Protestant and
Catholic. It argues that the character of the political changes
(dispersed sovereignty, local autonomy) prevented both a general
reformation of the Church before 1520 and a national reformation
thereafter. The resulting settlement maintained the public peace
through politically structured religious communities (confessions),
thereby avoiding further religious strife and fixing the
confessions into the Empire's constitution. The Germans' emergence
into the modern era as a people having two national religions was
the reformation's principal legacy to modern Germany.
Research into reading development and reading disabilities has been
dominated by phonologically guided theories for several decades. In
this volume, the authors of 11 chapters report on a wide array of
current research topics, examining the scope, limits and
implications of a phonological theory. The chapters are organized
in four sections. The first concerns the nature of the relations
between script and speech that make reading possible, considering
how different theories of phonology may illuminate the implication
of these relations for reading development and skill. The second
set of chapters focuses on phonological factors in reading
acquisition that pertain to early language development, effects of
dialect, the role of instruction, and orthographic learning. The
third section identifies factors beyond the phonological that may
influence success in learning to read by examining cognitive
limitations that are sometimes co-morbid with reading disabilities,
contrasting the profiles of specific language impairment and
dyslexia, and considering the impact of particular languages and
orthographies on language acquisition. Finally, in the fourth
section, behavioral-genetic and neurological methods are used to
further develop explanations of reading differences and early
literacy development. The volume is an essential resource for
researchers interested in the cognitive foundations of reading and
literacy, language and communication disorders, or
psycholinguistics; and those working in reading disabilities,
learning disabilities, special education, and the teaching of
reading.

Edgar Rice Burroughs was not satisfied with creating characters and
events within the world that we know; instead he created whole new
worlds for histories, and he filled them with peoples, languages,
cities, wars, plants, machines, and monsters that were believable
to the reader, yet still alien and fantastic enough to thrill and
delight. From A-Kor, the keeper of the Towers of Jetan in Manator,
through Zytheb, one of the priests of Brulor in Ashair, this is a
comprehensive reference to the fantastic worlds of Burroughs. Each
entry provides a complete definition, along with a reference to the
book in which the entry appeared. For terms, the language, either
actual (e.g., Latin and French) or Burroughs-created (e.g., The
Tongue of the Great Ape or Pal-ul-don), from which it was derived
is given.
This impressive volume contains the edited proceedings of a
symposium held in honor of Isabelle Y. Liberman, whose teaching and
writings laid the foundation for contemporary views of reading
disability. Her work has influenced ways of thinking about the
nature of the problem and ways of working with children and adults
who experience unusual difficulty in learning to read. The
symposium covered four themes that were central to Dr. Liberman's
research on reading acquisition and disability: the development of
phonological awareness, the relationship between phonological
awareness and success in learning to read and write, the
investigation of other phonological processes associated with
reading and writing performance, and the implications of current
research on these matters for reading instruction. The text
includes a paper on each topic, followed by commentaries which
introduce additional research findings and theoretical
considerations -- all by leading researchers in the field.

In recent decades, religion's traditional distinctiveness under the
First Amendment has been challenged by courts and scholars. As
America grows more secular and as religious and nonreligious
convictions are increasingly seen as interchangeable, many have
questioned whether special treatment is still fair. In its recent
decisions, the Supreme Court has made clear that religion will
continue to be treated differently, but we lack a persuasive
account of religion's uniqueness that can justify this difference.
This book aims to develop such an account. Drawing on founding era
thought illumined by theology, philosophy of religion, and
comparative religion, it describes what is at stake in our
tradition of religious freedom in a way that can be appreciated by
the religious and nonreligious alike. From this account, it
develops a new framework for religion clause decision making and
explains the implications of this framework for current
controversies regarding protections for religious conscience.

We mounted a treadmill on top of a six degree-of-freedom motion
base platform to investigate locomotor responses produced by
healthy adults introduced to a dynamic walking surface. The
experiment examined self-selected strategies employed by
participants when exposed to continuous, sinusoidal lateral motion
of the support surface while walking. Torso translation and step
width were used to classify responses used to stabilize gait in a
novel, dynamic environment. Two response categories emerged.
Participants tended to either fix themselves in space (FIS),
allowing the treadbelt to move laterally beneath them, or they
fixed themselves to the base (FTB), moving laterally as the motion
base oscillated. The degree of fixation in both extremes varied
across participants. This finding suggests that normal adults have
innate and varied preferences for reacquiring gait stability, some
depending more heavily on vision (FIS group) and others on
proprioception (FTB group). Keywords: Human locomotion, Unstable
surface, Treadmill, Adaptation, Stability
