Published in 1542 to an astonished and captivated public, Chronicle of the Narvaez Expedition tells the unforgettable story of a sixteenth-century soldier turned explorer who, along with three other survivors of a shipwreck, makes his way across an unknown geographic and cultural landscape. This Norton Critical Edition is based on David Frye's new translation. It is accompanied by Ilan Stavan's introduction, the translator's preface, the editor's detailed explanatory annotations, and a map tracing Cabeza de Vaca's journey from Florida to California. "Alternative Narratives and Sequels" enriches the reader's understanding of and appreciation for Cabeza de Vaca's chronicle, which can be read both as historical record and as fiction (Cabeza de Vaca having written his account years after the events took place). Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdez's General and Natural History of the Indies (1535) provides a different account of the same journey, while sequels can be found in a 1539 letter from the Viceroy of New Spain to the Emperor and in Fray Marcos de Niza's Relacion on the Discovery of the Kingdom of Cibola (1539). The Spanish explorers, soldiers, and missionaries of the period saw the New World as a place of enchantment, riches, and opportunity. This spirit is captured in "Contexts" with documents including a 1493 letter from Christopher Columbus to a potential benefactor of his future travels; Hernan Cortes's 1520 letter from Mexico; and an excerpt from Fray Bartolome's Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies (1542). A selection from Miguel Leon Portilla's Broken Spears provides readers with the viewpoint of the vanquished. "Criticism" includes five major assessments of Chronicle of the Narvaez Expedition spanning eighty years. In 1526 Carlos I of Spain granted Panfilo de Narvaez a license to claim what is now the Gulf Coast of the United States. Panfilo de Narvaez set sail in 1527 to conquer and settle present day Florida. Setting out with a crew of approximately 600 members ultimately only four members would survive the ill-fated expedition. The journey would take these four survivors from Spain to Hispaniola and Cuba and then onto Florida. Sailing through a hurricane and other storms the expedition would finally land near Tampa Bay. Suffering from Indian attacks and the effects of poor food and disease the crew, of which there was now only eighty, decided to sail from Florida to Mexico. In 1536, the four survivors-Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, Alonso del Castillo Maldonado, Andres Dorantes de Carranza, and his enslaved Moor Estevanico-finally managed to rejoin Spanish countrymen in present-day Mexico City. Upon returning to Spain Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca would receive considerable notoriety for his published account of the ordeal.

Naufragios describe una de las mas grandes aventuras que un humano haya vivido alguna vez. Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca fue un explorador espanol nacido en Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz) hacia 1490. Pocas vidas han sido tan ricas en aventuras como la de este hombre. En 1527 fue miembro de una expedicion integrada por 300 hombres y capitaneada por Panfilo de Narvaez. En 1528 llegaron a la bahia de Tampa, y de alli se dirigieron por tierra hacia Mexico. Despues de seis anos de cautiverio, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca y otros tres expedicionarios lograron huir de sus captores en 1535, y recorrieron el sudoeste estadounidense y norte de Mexico hasta llegar a un poblado a orillas del rio Sinaloa. A su regreso a Espana en 1537, la corona lo nombro Gobernador del Virreinato del Rio de la Plata. Entre 1541 y 1542 estuvo al frente de una expedicion del Brasil, y descubrio las Cataratas del Iguazu. En 1544 volvio a Espana bajo arresto por oponerse al uso de tanta barbarie contra los indios, alli lo desterraron al Africa hasta 1556, cuando obtuvo el perdon por parte del rey Felipe II, quien lo nombro presidente del tribunal supremo de Sevilla, donde se radico en un monasterio sevillano. Fallecio en Sevilla hacia 1560. Naufragios cuenta su primera aventura en America del Norte.
