ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE Since the 1970s,
environmental issues have become a major concern for European
citizens and thus for European politicians. In the same time frame
the political sphere in Europe, and in particular within the
European Union, has also been undergoing major transformations.
Dealing with environmental issues over more than fifty years in a
historical perspective enables us to gain a better understanding of
these transformations, notably the emergence of a European public
sphere and how this is changing decision-making processes. Drawing
on recent research results from various disciplines, including
history, sociology, law and political sciences, this volume
addresses the methodological challenge of a European perspective on
a transnational subject - one that is commonly distorted by a
national prism. It shows how perceptions of the environment are
increasingly converging and how these convergences of views across
political or linguistic borders in the long run exert an undeniable
influence not only on political debates but also on political
decisions across Europe. Revealing European characteristics of
perceptions, debates and policies, this volume contributes to a
history of Europeanisation beyond the usual political turning
points and limits.
A remarkable look at Iran through the lenses of 23 women
photographers, at a moment in history when Iranian women are
fighting for their rights with courage and determination. Breathing
Space showcases the work of twenty-three women photographers from
Iran and their diverse approaches to their craft. Exploring a range
of photographic styles and genres, they record the past and present
upheavals of their homeland as well as tackling subjects such as
the nature of memory, the tension between tradition and modernity,
and the scars of conflict and loss. Whether documentary or
conceptual, their images have global resonance and speak of the
hunger for freedom and the power of women to shape the world.
This book explores, through the vision of ten contemporary Iranian
photographers, the contrasts and contradictions that exist in
Iranian Society at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Each
representation is different to the next and each image serves to
represent the main conflict present in Iran today: that of the
power of tradition versus the quest for modernity. Each of the ten
photographers has chosen an aspect of daily life in their country,
for example, a cafe, a shopping mall, and the clerics, with each
serving to show another part of the mosaic of cultural experience
in Iran. One theme that remains constant through all of the images
is that of women, who remain living symbols of the interaction
between change and stagnation. In this book, women test the limits
of the Hijab and their experience is used to represent that of
young women all around the world.

Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic used to treat superficial skin
infections and to control spread of Methicillin Resistant
Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The existence of mupirocin resistance
among MRSA isolates is cause for concern since there are not many
effective alternatives for mupirocin resistant strains.
Indiscriminate use of antibiotics has led to the development of
antibiotic resistant strains for commonly used antibiotics. Thus, a
detailed study is required with regard to proper antibiotic usage
and susceptibility testing, irrespective of the organisms isolated
from samples to find out the resistance patterns. Hence, we believe
that our study will provide information to Clinicians in
prescribing effective and appropriate antimicrobial agents against
a very important hospital acquired infection such as MRSA to help
improve the health care system.
A hundred years after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the Museum
Funf Kontinente is showing the special exhibition In trockenen
Tuchern! Gewebtes und Besticktes aus dem Osmanischen Reich [A
Stitch in Time! Woven and Embroidered Textiles from the Ottoman
Empire]. The accompanying publication provides an insight into the
different aspects of inhabitants' life during the Late Ottoman
Empire, based on selected textiles and everyday items from the
collections of the Museum Funf Kontinente as well as the private
collections of Ther and Middendorf. Together with their rural
counterparts featuring woven red and blue patterns, the napkins and
hand towels from the 18th to 20th century, artistically embroidered
with blossom, fruits, or architectural elements, accompanied people
from cradle to grave and bear impressive witness to their
craftsmanship. Today these textile objects are a significant part
of the cultural legacy of Turkey. Text in German with partial
Turkish translation.
