Coordination: Neural, Behavioral and Social Dynamics (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Armin Fuchs, Viktor K. Jirsa Coordination: Neural, Behavioral and Social Dynamics (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Armin Fuchs, Viktor K. Jirsa
R2,841 Discovery Miles 28 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the most striking features of Coordination Dynamics is its interdisciplinary character. The problems we are trying to solve in this field range from behavioral phenomena of interlimb coordination and coordination between stimuli and movements (perception-action tasks) through neural activation patterns that can be observed during these tasks to clinical applications and social behavior. It is not surprising that close collaboration among scientists from different fields as psychology, kinesiology, neurology and even physics are imperative to deal with the enormous difficulties we are facing when we try to understand a system as complex as the human brain.

The chapters in this volume are not simply write-ups of the lectures given by the experts at the meeting but are written in a way that they give sufficient introductory information to be comprehensible and useful for all interested scientists and students.

Complexity and Synergetics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Stefan C. Muller, Peter J. Plath, Gunter Radons, Armin Fuchs Complexity and Synergetics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)

R4,927 Discovery Miles 49 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

All of us are confronted with complex phenomena occurring in daily life and in the living and inanimate nature surrounding us. Our scientific curiosity strives to unravel the mechanisms at work to create such complexity. Among various approaches to solve this problem, the field of synergetics, developed by Hermann Haken, has proven very successful as a general and interdisciplinary concept for describing and explaining complex phenomena that appear in systems under non-equilibrium conditions. These comprise dynamical states in evolving systems, spatial structure-forming processes, synchronization of states and regulatory mechanisms, and many other examples. The encompassing concepts have been applied to many disciplines, like physics, chemistry, biology, and beyond those also from synergetics to information theory, brain science, economics, and others. Starting from basic methods of complexity research and synergetics, this volume contains thirty contributions on complex systems that exhibit spontaneous pattern formation far from thermal equilibrium. Written by international experts and young researchers assembled under one roof, this volume reflects state of the art research from a variety of scientific fields and disciplines where complexity theory and synergetics are important or even indispensable tools today and in the future.

Nonlinear Dynamics in Complex Systems - Theory and Applications for the Life-, Neuro- and Natural Sciences (Hardcover, 2013... Nonlinear Dynamics in Complex Systems - Theory and Applications for the Life-, Neuro- and Natural Sciences (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Armin Fuchs
R3,070 Discovery Miles 30 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With many areas of science reaching across their boundaries and becoming more and more interdisciplinary, students and researchers in these fields are confronted with techniques and tools not covered by their particular education. Especially in the life- and neurosciences quantitative models based on nonlinear dynamics and complex systems are becoming as frequently implemented as traditional statistical analysis. Unfamiliarity with the terminology and rigorous mathematics may discourage many scientists to adopt these methods for their own work, even though such reluctance in most cases is not justified.

This book bridges this gap by introducing the procedures and methods used for analyzing nonlinear dynamical systems. In Part I, the concepts of fixed points, phase space, stability and transitions, among others, are discussed in great detail and implemented on the basis of example elementary systems. Part II is devoted to specific, non-trivial applications: coordination of human limb movement (Haken-Kelso-Bunz model), self-organization and pattern formation in complex systems (Synergetics), and models of dynamical properties of neurons (Hodgkin-Huxley, Fitzhugh-Nagumo and Hindmarsh-Rose). Part III may serve as a refresher and companion of some mathematical basics that have been forgotten or were not covered in basic math courses. Finally, the appendix contains an explicit derivation and basic numerical methods together with some programming examples as well as solutions to the exercises provided at the end of certain chapters. Throughout this book all derivations are as detailed and explicit as possible, and everybody with some knowledge of calculus should be able to extract meaningful guidance follow and apply the methods of nonlinear dynamics to their own work.

"This book is a masterful treatment, one might even say a gift, to the interdisciplinary scientist of the future."

"With the authoritative voice of a genuine practitioner, Fuchs is a master teacher of how to handle complex dynamical systems."

"What I find beautiful in this book is its clarity, the clear definition of terms, every step explained simply and systematically."

(J.A.Scott Kelso, excerpts from the foreword)
