This volume contains the updated and expanded lecture notes of the 37th Saas-Fee Advanced Course organised by the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy. It offers the most comprehensive and up to date review of one of the hottest research topics in astrophysics - how our Milky Way galaxy formed. Joss Bland-Hawthorn & Ken Freeman lectured on Near Field Cosmology - The Origin of the Galaxy and the Local Group. Francesca Matteucci's chapter is on Chemical evolution of the Milky Way and its Satellites. As designed by the SSAA, books in this series - and this one too - are targeted at graduate and PhD students and young researchers in astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology. Lecturers and researchers entering the field will also benefit from the book.

Human Tissue in the Realist Novel, 1850-1895 (1st ed. 2023): Ben Moore Human Tissue in the Realist Novel, 1850-1895 (1st ed. 2023)
Ben Moore
R1,232 Discovery Miles 12 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Pivot engages with current debates about anthropocentrism and the Anthropocene to propose a reappraisal of the realist novel in the second half of the nineteenth century. Through three case studies, it argues for ‘human tissue’ as a conceptual tool for reading that brings together biology, literature and questions of layering. This new approach is shown to be especially salient to the Victorian period, when the application of ‘tissue’ to biology first emerges. The book is distinctive in bringing together theoretical concerns around realism and the Anthropocene – two major topics in literary criticism – and presenting a new methodology to approach this conjunction, demonstrated through original readings of Charles Kingsley, George Eliot, and Emile Zola and two English-language writers he influenced (George Moore and Vernon Lee).

Invisible Architecture in Nineteenth-Century Literature - Rethinking Urban Modernity: Ben Moore Invisible Architecture in Nineteenth-Century Literature - Rethinking Urban Modernity
Ben Moore
R3,183 Discovery Miles 31 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ben Moore presents a new approach to reading urban modernity in nineteenth-century literature, by bringing together hidden, mobile and transparent features of city space as part of a single system he calls 'invisible architecture'. Resisting narratives of the nineteenth-century as progressing from concealment to transparency, he instead argues for a dynamic interaction between these tendencies. Across two parts, this book addresses a range of apparently disparate buildings and spaces. Part I offers new readings of three writers and their cities: Elizabeth Gaskell and Manchester, Charles Dickens and London, and Émile Zola and Paris, focusing on the cellar-dwelling, the railway and river, and the department store respectively. Part II takes a broader view by analysing three spatial forms that have not usually been considered features of nineteenth-century modernity: the Gothic cathedral, the arabesque and white walls. Through these readings, the book extends our understanding of the uneven modernity of this period.

This book is about the history and future of life and the universe, written at a level that any educated lay-person can understand and enjoy. It describes our place in time and space, how we got here and where we are going. It will take you on a journey from the beginning of time to the end of the universe to uncover our origins and reveal our destiny. It will explain how mankind acquired this knowledge starting from the beginning of civilization when the ancient Greeks first began to ask questions about the nature of the world around them.

Ben Moore takes us on a path of discovery that connects astrophysics with subjects as varied as biology, neuroscience and evolution; from the origin of atoms to how stars shine and die, from ants and elephants to space travel and extra-terrestrial life. But as our universe grows older and its stars fade away and stop shining, can life continue for eternity or is all life destined for complete extinction? And what is the purpose of all of this anyway?

On the German edition:
"With his public talks and his new book "Elefanten im All" the Brit is on his way of becoming a popstar of science. Moore has a story to tell. The story of everything. From the beginning to the end of our existence. And he does so with esprit and catching passion." Rico Bandle, Weltwoche, 1. November 2012

"The kind of book you come across only every few years." Artur K. Vogel, Der Bund, September 2012"

In Part I "Learning from the Past" we explore the history of American Manufacturing. We are on a trajectory toward the future. We intend to show that trajectory by a short review of our recent past. In Chapter 1, titled "The History of American Manufacturing- Where it All Came From" we examine the impact of the First Industrial Revolution (from Manpower to Steam Power) and the Second Industrial Revolutions (of Modern Day Manufacturing Methods) on American Manufacturing. In Chapter 2, which is called "The Information Revolution in Manufacturing," we examine the impact of the Third Industrial Revolution that started after the 1940s and is still in process. In this chapter we explore the shift in manufacturing from Individuals to System Thinking, the growth of Lean and Six Sigma methodologies and the emergence of MRPII/ERP systems. In Part Two, which is called "Efficient and Profitable Customization," we take a look ahead to the future. We show how American manufacturing is only midway through these current trends and how these trends foreshadow the remaining topics in this book: systems thinking, the engineering pyramid, product configuration, configuration engineering and mass customization. In Chapter 3, called "It's Not about the Computer, it's about Systems Thinking," we explore how recent advances in Systems Thinking have helped to lower development costs. In Chapter 4, called "The Engineering Pyramid," we introduce readers to our Engineering Pyramid paradigm and a top down approach that can be utilized to increase the speed of innovation and dramatically lower engineering costs. In Chapter 5, called "Systemization and Standardization - They are Not the Same" we explore the current challenges of designing and building customized products and our methodology for top down systemization and standardization to increase the speed of innovation and dramatically lower engineering costs. In Chapter 6, called "Mass Customization," we demonstrate the importance of mass customization for the future of American manufacturing and describe how current leaders have made mass customization profitable in their businesses. In Part Three, called "The Human Component - It's Still All About the People," we look at the continuing importance and the necessity of people systems in the manufacturing process. In Chapter 7, called "Employee On Boarding" we provide an approach to bringing people into the organization. In Chapter 8, called "High Performance Team-Based Work Systems," we tell you how to maximize throughput, profit and career rewards through an empowered team based work system.. In Chapter 9, called "Technology Transfer and Training," we explore how employees can learn the necessary skills for working in a highly efficient manufacturing environment. The last section, Part Four, is entitled, "Putting it All Together." Here, in Chapter 10, called "Taking Your Company There" we tell you who will be the winners and losers of this natural extension of American manufacturers. Also, we tell you how you will know if it's too late for your company. Sorry...some of you readers won't be happy.
