How should we construct sacred spaces, the places where we worship?
Transcending Architecture considers the mysterious, profound, and
real power of designed environments to address the spiritual
dimension of our humanity. By incorporating perspectives from
within and without architecture, the book o ers a wide, critical,
and nuanced understandin of the lived relationship between the
built and the numinous worlds. Far from avoiding the charged issues
of subjectivity, culture andintangibility, the book examines
phenomenological, symbolic and designerly ways in which the holy
gets fixed and experienced through buildings, landscapes, and urban
forms, and not just in institutionally defined religious or sacred
places. Acknowledging that no individual voice can exhaust the
topic, Transcending Architecture brings together a stellar group of
scholars and practitioners to share their insights: architect
Juhani Pallasmaa and philosopher Karsten Harries, comparative
religion scholar Lindsay Jones and architectural theoretician Karla
Britton, sacred architecture researcher Thomas Barrie and
theologian Kevin Seasoltz, landscape architect Rebecca Krinke and
Faith & Form magazine editor Michael Crosbie, are among the
illustrious contributors. The result is the most direct, clear, and
subtle scholarly text solely focused on the transcendental
dimension of architecture available. This book thus provides, on
one hand, understanding, relief, and growth to an architectural
discipline that usually avoids its ineffable dimension and, on the
other hand, a necessary dose of detail and reality to fields such
as theological aesthetics, material anthropology, or philosophical
phenomenology that too often fall trapped into unproductive
generalizations and over-intellectualizations.
LIC.

This book presents the proceedings of the first IFIP WG 6.8
conference on Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks held in Albacete,
Spain. The papers selected to be included in this volume illustrate
the state-of-the-art and current trends in the area of wireless
sensor and actor networks. The comprehensive program was organized
into eight topics: Actors; Applications; Security; Energy; Quality
of Service; Localization; Middleware; Protocols.
The International Conference on Food Engineering is held every four
years and draws global participation. ICEF 10 will be held in April
2008 in Chile with the theme of food engineering at interfaces.
This will not be a typical proceedings with uneven contributions.
Papers will be solicited from each plenary speaker plus two or
three invited speakers from each topic and the goal is to publish a
book that conveys the interdisciplinary spirit of the meeting as
well as covers the topics in depth, creating a strong reference
work. The idea is to explore how food engineers have to be prepared
in years ahead not only to perform in their normal activities but
also to engage in new challenges and opportunities that will make
the profession more attractive, responsive, and able to create a
larger impact. These challenges and opportunities are within the
profession and at interfaces with other areas. A major role of
engineers is to incorporate new knowledge into the profession and
respond to practical needs. The goal is to explore how food
engineers are integrating developments in the basic sciences of
physics and chemistry, nutrition, informatics, material sciences,
genomics (and other -omics), quality and safety, consumer behavior
and gastronomy. Interfaces with the environment, the business
sector, regulations and export markets are also important to
consider.
This volume focuses on the present state of English historical
linguistics as a unitary discipline. In particular, the selection
of papers challenges the idea that the community of linguists
working on the history of English stands united merely by subject
matter, but divided by method and theoretical outlook. The volume
emphasizes the way in which scholars in our community are lead to
refine and further articulate their empirical proposals by
challenges from different research paradigms. Thus, a running
thematic thread of the volume is the dialogue between generative
grammatical theory and corpus studies, including those in
sociolinguistic tradition. The volume is divided in four main
sections: syntax, phonology, text types, sociolinguistics and
dialectology.
The general goal of this book is to deduce rigorously, from the
first principles, the partial differential equations governing the
thermodynamic processes undergone by continuum media under forces
and heat. Solids and fluids are considered in a unified framework.
Reacting mixtures of fluids are also included for which general
notions of thermodynamics are recalled, such as the Gibbs
equilibrium theory.
Linear approximate models are mathematically obtained by
calculating the derivatives of the constitutive response functions.
They include the classical models for linear vibrations of
thermoelastic solids and also for wave propagation in fluids
(dissipative and non-dissipative acoustics and internal gravity
waves).
* Fits COAMFT, COACRE, and CSWE requirements for social and
cultural diversity * Addresses a cutting-edge question that spans
across theory, training, and clinical practice: "How can
practitioners integrate awareness of societal systems across models
into their everyday work with individuals, couples and families?" *
Applies a sociocultural perspective to a variety of evidence-based
and historically effective practice models to address a plethora of
emotional, psychological, and relational problems. * Bridges theory
and practice * Authors are the leaders in the field of
socioculturally attuned family therapy * New edition integrates
current trends as well as cultural and societal change, such as the
BLM movement, LGBTQ issues, and the Trump presidency. * Includes
more diverse voices that describe the creative application of this
framework in practice. This is presented using key text boxes
throughout the text. * New edition includes how the authors have
moved their thinking forward with regards to the framework, such as
third-order thinking as a paradigm shift in the field of family
therapy, ethics as infused in everyday practice from a third-order
perspective, and the limits and applicability of Socioculturally
Attuned Family Therapy as a transtheoretical, transnational
approach. * Includes reflective questions at the end of each
chapter. * Includes a new chapter on socio-emotional relational
therapy and how this relates to SCARFT Applies a sociocultural

Mobilities within the European Union (EU) have changed
significantly since the classical intra-regional migrations of the
1950s–1970s. After a period of reduced, less visible flows in the
21st century mobilities increased again, first linked to EU
expansion towards the East, and from 2008, with renewed South-North
flows following the impact of the Great Recession on Southern
European countries. It is in this context that the current volume
explores how these recent migrations reflect new and more complex
patterns of mobility, increasingly uncertain and unstable,
involving both natives and naturalised migrants. It also seeks to
unpack the multiple connections between these new migration systems
and other systems affecting social protection, gender and
citizenship, and how these intersect with other factors such as
class, age, race and ethnicity. The different chapters of the book
examine this covering a wide variety of cases, including intra-EU
flows from Portugal and Spain, recent Spanish and Latin American
migrants in London, Paris and Brussels, and Romanian migration to
the UK and France, thus adding to its richness. This book will be
of interest to academics, researchers and advanced students of
Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, Gender Studies, Public Policy,
and Politics. It was originally published as a special issue of
Ethnic and Racial Studies.
This book makes a timely contribution to debates surrounding
transnational political participation, the relationship between
diasporas and conflict, and the gendered experiences of migrants.
It fills a significant lacuna in research by analysing how migrants
relate to and become involved in the politics of their home and
host countries, and how transnational political fields emerge and
function. The author achieves this by focusing on the little known
but instructive case of Colombian migration to Europe, and the
connections between these flows and the armed conflict and efforts
for peace in Colombia. Shedding light on different types of
migration and the rising complexity of international population
movements, this innovative work will appeal to students and
scholars of migration and diaspora studies, gender, political
participation, conflict and peace studies and Latin American
studies. It will also interest policy makers and community
development workers engaged in these areas.

Gender Equity: Global Policies and Perspectives on Advancing Social
Justice provides an in-depth analysis of global perspectives on
advancing public and social gender policy. Shedding new light on
inequalities faced by women and girls around the world,, the essays
in this collection emphasize cultural biases and societal
prejudices women face in STEM and in creative economies as well as
in political decision making processes. In doing so, the volume
highlights the interlinked relationship between the advancement of
global policy and the very interpretation of gender equality.
