Cross-border cooperation is integral to the peace-building objective of the EU. Yet, 25 years of such cooperation has often failed to translate into connecting people across borders. This study assesses the significance of cross-border cooperation for addressing Europe's conflict wounds and examines its prospects in an enlarged EU of 28 members.
This book gives an innovative account of communal identity in
Northern Ireland and its relationship with a changing landscape. It
argues that the development of a multi-level polity in the European
Union (EU) and the sustained Anglo-Irish commitment to political
process in Northern Ireland are twin dynamics shifting the
political context for Ulster Unionist and northern Irish
Nationalist identities. In this changing context, the modern
emphasis on objectivity and territorial parameters delimited by the
nation-state are beginning to be displaced by a postmodern concern
for the representation of difference and transterritorial
networking. As a result, northern Irish Nationalists and Ulster
Unionists are being forced to re-examine the (premodern) cultural
and (modern) territorial resources of their respective identities.
The book provides a forum (through dialogues) for the
representatives of these identities to consider changing conditions
and attempts to evaluate their implications for future structures
of government and for communal identities themselves.
This study provides an account of communal identity in Northern Ireland, focusing on the possibilities for change created by the twin dynamics of European integration and the Anglo-Irish political process. These dynamics share a conceptual foundation, based on the representation of difference, that undermines the established norms of modern politics. The author argues that such a shift in conditions and concepts has major implications for Northern Irish Nationalist and Ulster Unionist identities.

This book is about the defining people, events and institutions in the author's life. Although he has a PhD in physics and spent his working life in the field of physics, the book has very little to do with the technical and scientific aspects of his life. He began as a farm boy and went to a one room country school and a small town high school He did not appreciate the importance of many of these influences at the time. For example, he certainly did not think that working mules on the farm was beneficial but now he can see that he learned a lot from those aggravating beasts. His education during the years of World War II left a lot to be desired but it was good enough to prepare him for the rigors of MIT degrees in physics. It is hoped that this book will help some young people in similar situations in their efforts.
