Arthur C Brooks
R272 Discovery Miles 2 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The #1 New York Times Bestseller From the bestselling author and columnist behind The Atlantic's popular "How to Build a Life" series, a guide to transforming the life changes we fear into a source of strength. In the first half of life, ambitious strivers embrace a simple formula for success in work and life: focus single-mindedly, work tirelessly, sacrifice personally, and climb the ladder relentlessly. It works. Until it doesn't. It turns out the second half of life is governed by different rules. In middle age, many strivers begin to find success coming harder and harder, rewards less satisfying, and family relationships withering. In response, they do what strivers always do: they double down on work in an attempt to outrun decline and weakness, and deny the changes that are becoming more and more obvious. The result is often anger, fear, and disappointment at a time in life that they imagined would be full of joy, fulfillment, and pride. It doesn't have to be that way. In From Strength to Strength, happiness expert and bestselling author Arthur C. Brooks reveals a path to beating the "striver's curse." Drawing on science, classical philosophy, theology, and history, he shares counterintuitive strategies for releasing old habits and forming new life practices, showing you how to: - Kick the habits of workaholism, success addiction, and self-objectification - Meditate on death-in order to beat fear and live well - Start a spiritual adventure - Embrace weakness in a way that turns it into strength. Change in your life is inevitable, but suffering is not. From Strength to Strength shows you how to accept the gifts of the second half of life with grace, joy, and ever deepening purpose.

Great Muslim Leaders - Lessons for Education: Melanie C. Brooks, Miriam D. Ezzani Great Muslim Leaders - Lessons for Education
Melanie C. Brooks, Miriam D. Ezzani
R2,640 Discovery Miles 26 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Great Muslim Leaders presents Islamic-informed alternatives to Eurocentric Christian understandings of education and educational leadership. It does so by interrupting and displacing the West's centuries long dismissive stance and monolithic gaze on Islam by showcasing outstanding diverse Muslim leaders across space and time. Each chapter focuses on a single leader, and includes a biographical sketch; a discussion of their context and activities as a leader; key lessons readers can learn from their leadership, and recommendations that are relevant for teachers and educational leaders. This collection of Muslim leaders, chosen by Muslim scholars, brings to education discourse the breadth of Islamic intellectual history, giving the book a global appeal and facilitating a sharing of innovative and classic ideas across cultures, faith traditions, and national boundaries. Great Muslim Leaders introduces to readers Muslim intellectuals, spiritual leaders, philosophers, poets, artists, activists, scientists, celebrities, politicians, educators, film makers, historical figures, theorists, and academics whose lives have positively shaped their community, society, and the world. Their lived experiences are underpinned by deep spirituality and faith, revealing the significance and import religious belief has on moral and ethical action. The book concludes with seven lessons that cut across the chapters that encapsulate the immense value Islamic spirituality and faith bring to education and leadership.

Quest for Blackbeard: the True Story of Edward Thache and His World (Hardcover): Baylus C. Brooks Quest for Blackbeard: the True Story of Edward Thache and His World (Hardcover)
Baylus C. Brooks
R1,526 Discovery Miles 15 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over 2 lbs, with 614 pages of text, tables, and graphs! Do you know who "Blackbeard the Pirate" was? Probably not! Born into a substantial family in Bristol, the eldest son of Capt. Edward and Elizabeth Thache sailed for Jamaica with his family sometime before 1695. Capt. Edward Thache of St. Jago de la Vega or "Spanish Town" died there at age 47 while his son, Edward "Blackbeard" Thache Jr. joined the Royal Navy and fought in Queen Anne's War aboard HMS Windsor. Thache resembled more a Robber Baron of the early 20th century than a poor downtrodden member of Benjamin Hornigold's "Flying Gang" in the Bahamas - or even his "pupil." Capt. Charles Johnson's "A General History of the Pyrates" is a flawed historical work and much of what we have previously known about Blackbeard is simply not true. This book attempts to rediscover exactly who Blackbeard really was...and how he related to his maritime American "Pirate Nation!" Quite a few surprises are in store! Website: http://baylusbrooks.com

Baylus C. Brooks
R1,250 Discovery Miles 12 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Edward England, Edward Congdon, Olivier LeVasseur, and Richard Taylor sail to Madagascar in 1720 and join with Jasper Seager to make havoc against the East-Indian Company. These are the stories of their misadventures and lives. Some lived opulently - some died horrible deaths. They met Dutch, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and the native Betsimisaraka with whom they shared their short lives. They also captured a Portuguese Viceroy, the Fort at Delagoa, East-India Company officials, including an angry Scottish captain, and traded with a Royal Navy Commodore intent upon an illicit trade in gold and jewels!

Critical Perspectives on Black Education - Spirituality, Religion and Social Justice (Hardcover): Noelle Witherspoon Arnold,... Critical Perspectives on Black Education - Spirituality, Religion and Social Justice (Hardcover)

R2,701 Discovery Miles 27 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While nation engages in debates concerning central issues of religion and religious diversity in education, the historic saliency of religion and spirituality in the Black community and in the education of its children continues to be largely ignored. Historically, religion and spirituality were foundational to the development and understanding of social justice issues, including, but not limited to, issues of protest, community up-lift, notions of care, and anti-oppression. Taking into account the historical significance of religion and spirituality in the Black community, it is essential for education scholars to cultivate these long-standing connections as a means for advancing contemporary struggles for social justice, religiosity in education, and counter-hegemonic praxis. The purpose of this book is to expand our understanding of spirituality and religion as related to the p-20 schooling of Black students. Educational scholarship continues to explore the workings of social justice to ameliorate inequities for those who have not been wellserved in schools. Although the concept of social justice remains a somewhat inchoate term in educational literature, this book seeks to explore the historicity of religion and spirituality while offering a scaffold that links ordinary everyday acts of justice, religion, and spirituality in education to a culture that systematically and institutionally assaults the worth of Black students. It is important to note that this book is grounded in a broad concept of religion and spirituality and the editors seek to be inclusive of all types, styles, and traditions of religiosity and spirituality.

Today, many thoughtful and compassionate Christians are addressing the challenge of alleviating poverty. But while much progress has been made, many well-intentioned efforts have led Christians to actions that are not only ineffective, but leave the most vulnerable in a worse situation than before. Is there a better answer? Combining biblical exegesis with proven economic principles, For the Least of These: A Biblical Answer to Poverty equips Christians with both a solid biblical and economic understanding of how best to care for the poor and foster sustainable economic development. With contributions from fifteen leading Christian economists, theologians, historians, and practitioners, it presents the case for why a multi-faceted approach is needed, and why a renewed focus on markets and trade are the world's best hope for alleviating poverty and serving those in financial need.

Policymakers, civic leaders, and scholars have increasingly focused their attention over the last decade-and-a-half on the importance of voluntary participation in civil society. From George H. W. Bush's Thousand Points of Light to Bill Clinton's AmeriCorps to George W. Bush's faith-based initiatives, it is undeniable that communities are looking to increase their levels of charity and voluntarism in the provision of public goods and services. What mobilizes giving and volunteering? What are the characteristics of communities that are engaged, and those that are not? What can policymakers and nonprofit managers do to change the current landscape in places with low levels of participation? These are the questions this edited collection addresses. It is the first book specifically dedicated to community giving and volunteering efforts with a best practices element. Published in cooperation with the Alan K. Campbell Public Affairs Institute at Syracuse University.

Globalization and Education - Teaching, Learning and Leading in the World Schoolhouse (Hardcover): Jeffrey S Brooks, Anthony H.... Globalization and Education - Teaching, Learning and Leading in the World Schoolhouse (Hardcover)
Jeffrey S Brooks, Anthony H. Normore, Melanie C. Brooks, Nicola Sum
R2,652 Discovery Miles 26 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Globalization and Education: Teaching, Learning and Leading in the World Schoolhouse explores the various ways educators' work is influenced by globalization. This book presents topics and contexts traditionally marginalized in mainstream education research discourses and shows how local and global education issues are intersecting and shaping the ways in which ideas and practices are shared around the world. Each chapter presents an educational issue in an understudied international context, such as Saudi Arabia, Guyana, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil, and Nepal. Topics range from how the knowledge industry shapes education in schools to the impact of globalization on school leadership, teaching, and learning. We invite scholars and practitioners to join us in the world schoolhouse, a place where discussion about educational understanding and improvement is not bounded by national borders, school systems or language. This book will both challenge and expand thinking about the complexities of education during a time of globalization and change.

The Anglo-Norman Lay of Haveloc - Text and Translation (Hardcover): Glyn S. Burgess, Leslie C. Brook The Anglo-Norman Lay of Haveloc - Text and Translation (Hardcover)
Glyn S. Burgess, Leslie C. Brook
R2,874 Discovery Miles 28 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

New edition and modern English translation of the Anglo-Norman version of the story of Haveloc - one of the most popular of the Middle Ages. The story of Haveloc first appears in the oldest chronicle of the kings of England Britain, Geffrei Gaimar's Estoire des Engleis, and it is found in a substantial number of later accounts of English history. It is unusual in that it seemingly deals with "real" persons and events; but although names for the prototypes of Haveloc and other personages have been put forward, any search for historical evidence has been largely fruitless. The Haveloc story remains a legend, indeed one of the most compelling legends of the Middle Ages. The Anglo-Norman lay of Haveloc survives in only two manuscripts, one (H) unedited since the nineteenth century and the other (P) since1925. This volume provides new editions of both versions and an English facing-page translation of the version in H. Also included is a translation of the Haveloc episode in Gaimar's chronicle and an edition and translation of thevarious shorter chronicle accounts, in French, English and Latin, which continued into the seventeenth century and survive in a modern English folk-tale. Glyn S. Burgess is Emeritus Professor and Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Liverpool; Leslie C. Brook is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham.

The Saxon and Norman Kings 3e (Hardcover, 3rd Edition): C. Brooke The Saxon and Norman Kings 3e (Hardcover, 3rd Edition)
C. Brooke
R3,703 Discovery Miles 37 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1963, this classic exploration of the history of English kings and kingship from the sixth to the twelfth centuries has now been updated for a new generation of readers. A prologue has been added summarizing changes in modern knowledge and underlining the difference between the history of the 'English people', a phrase of the sixth century, and the kingdom of the English, which only came of age in the tenth. An entirely new chapter discusses queens, including St Margaret, who became queen of Scotland. The bibliography has also been completely revised.

As in previous editions, one of the books most important features is that it is written from the sources inviting readers to reconstruct the story for themselves by engaging in a series of enquiries into, for example, the nature of king-making, the origins of the English kingdoms, and the meaning of the Bayeux tapestry.

This book discusses basic monitoring techniques that can be easily performed on emergency canine and feline patients in both first line emergency and primary care clinics. Techniques include blood pressure measurement, capnography, electrocardiography, pulse oximetry, and point of care monitoring ranging from the physical exam to bedside ultrasound and diagnostic tests such as PCV/TP, blood glucose and lactate. Each chapter begins with basic physiology as related to the monitoring technique, before reviewing how the piece of equipment used for monitoring works, pros and cons of the equipment, and limitations of the device. A simple, consistent layout for each chapter makes it easy to quickly locate information within the book. A final section in each chapter gives practical examples of how to use the monitoring technique in a clinical setting. The book also: - Emphasizes how physiology ties into what information each technique does (and does not) provide; - Includes pictures, tables, and diagrams to help explain concepts; - Delivers guidelines for rational interpretation of the results acquired. An important resource for both veterinary practitioners and students, this book provides a succinct approach to understanding the monitoring equipment used in emergency patients.

French Arthurian Literature IV: Eleven Old French Narrative Lays (Hardcover, New): Glyn S. Burgess, Leslie C. Brook French Arthurian Literature IV: Eleven Old French Narrative Lays (Hardcover, New)
Glyn S. Burgess, Leslie C. Brook
R2,901 Discovery Miles 29 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Text and facing translation of a selection of French narrative lays, with Arthurian subject matter and interest. The lay was a flourishing genre in the French courts of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, related to romance rather as the modern short story is to the novel. Its most famous exponent is arguably Marie de France, but in addition to her twelve lays, a number of others, mainly anonymous, have also come down to us, usually referred to as Breton lays or simply as narrative lays. The eleven anonymous lays presented in this volume show the varied natureof the genre. First brought together as a collection by Prudence Tobin in 1976, they have been freshly edited from the manuscript sources. They are presented here with facing English translation, together with substantial introductions for each lay, which deal principally with thematic issues and questions of general literary interest. GLYN S. BURGESS is Emeritus Professor of French at the University of Liverpool. LESLIE C. BROOK is Honorary Senior Research Fellow in French at the University of Birmingham.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER To get ahead today, you have to be a jerk, right? Divisive politicians. Screaming heads on television. Angry campus activists. Twitter trolls. Today in America, there is an "outrage industrial complex" that prospers by setting American against American, creating a "culture of contempt"--the habit of seeing people who disagree with us not as merely incorrect, but as worthless and defective. Maybe, like more than nine out of ten Americans, you dislike it. But hey, either you play along, or you'll be left behind, right? Wrong. In Love Your Enemies, social scientist and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller From Strength to Strength Arthur C. Brooks shows that abuse and outrage are not the right formula for lasting success. Brooks blends cutting-edge behavioral research, ancient wisdom, and a decade of experience leading one of America's top policy think tanks in a work that offers a better way to lead based on bridging divides and mending relationships. Brooks' prescriptions are unconventional. To bring America together, we shouldn't try to agree more. There is no need for mushy moderation, because disagreement is the secret to excellence. Civility and tolerance shouldn't be our goals, because they are hopelessly low standards. And our feelings toward our foes are irrelevant; what matters is how we choose to act. Love Your Enemies offers a clear strategy for victory for a new generation of leaders. It is a rallying cry for people hoping for a new era of American progress. Most of all, it is a roadmap to arrive at the happiness that comes when we choose to love one another, despite our differences.
