With the publication of the book Synchronizing Geometry, in 2006 the baseline of a typical OAB theoretical discourse was established in which a series of projects under development or construction stressed the importance of a theoretical background in the professional practice of architecture. A few years later, this book arrives showing the work carried out and now going into more depth on the direction and approach of Ferrater / OAB. It also analyses and reflects on the career of Carlos Ferrater, as well as the results of the development of a new office involving a group of young architects, including family members. The book explains how from experience and the examination and manipulation of some complex geometries a critical and theoretical vision of reality is established, assuming at all times rigour, social roots, landscape and construction. For this reason, the book also reveals how the activity of OAB is not only developed in the execution of construction projects, but how it is also complemented and enriched by going into depth in other fields such as teaching and academic research. This book illustrates how, from over 35 years experience on Carlos Ferrater's part, and the emergence and participation of a group of young architects ( such as Xavier Marti Gali, Lucia and Borja Ferrater, Nuria Ayala, Alberto Penin etc. ), a new concept of professional office has taken shape."
The project for the expansion of the Granada Parque de las Ciencias, on the river Genil, called for the construction of a single roof with slight inflexions that recalls an open hand, under which are housed the different programme spaces interconnected in a spatial continuum. The empty space that communicates the large boxes or containers of the different programmes - Macroscopio, Biodomo, Tecnoforo, Health Sciences, Al Andalus, auditoriums and temporary and permanent exhibition spaces - structures communications and logistics and relates with the Park's overall activity programme. The spatial structure ensures great flexibility in uses and situations which interconnect routes and themes. Most of the projects with topography in general terms replace the continuous quality of the roof with a succession of planes and porticos of varying form. In this way, the constructional autonomy and spatial quality of the roof as a continuous element become a sequential relation of intercommunicated spaces.
In recent years, Carlos Ferrater's architecture studio has regularly and continuously developed new avenues for formal expression. This collection of projects comprises a family of independent experiences, joined by a common logic of design approximation: Geometry as a means of approximating landscape and urban forms. The book is divided into three parts: The time of Geometry, Research Process and Ideographical Resources. This framework aims to define the conditions whereby the job of architecture is to move from geometry to space by means of construction. Carlos Ferrater's (Barcelona, 1944) works include: Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I in Barcelona; three blocks in Cerda's Ensanche; Housing complex at the Olympic Village Valle Hebron; Yacht Club in Estartit; Impiva Headquarters; Botanical Garden in Barcelona; and, Convention Center of Catalunya.
In the eastern Mediterranean, on the west coast of Turkey (the ancient Halicarnassus), atop a headland 450ft above sea level, an extraordinary new building has been constructed. This book unveils the processes involved in the creation of the Kaplankaya Club House by OAB (the Office of Architecture in Barcelona), from its initial conception to the development and construction. This is a timeless structure, combining both the essence of the abstract in modern architecture with the use of local construction techniques and traditional materials, resulting in the building's intense relationship with the Mediterranean landscape and light. Architects OAB have been involved in a huge number of recent international projects in France, Italy, Morocco, Turkey, the USA, Brazil and Mexico.
