Author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Childhood's End, The City and the Stars, and the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning Rendezvous with Rama, Arthur C. Clarke is the most celebrated science fiction author alive. He is—with H. G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, and Robert A. Heinlein—one of the writers who define science fiction in our time. Now Clarke has cooperated in the preparation of a massive, definitive edition of his collected shorter works. From early work like "Rescue Party" and "The Lion of Comarre," through classics like "The Star," "Earthlight," "The Nine Billion Names of God," and "The Sentinel" (kernel of the later novel, and movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey), all the way to later work like "A Meeting with Medusa" and "The Hammer of God," this immense volume encapsulates one of the great SF careers of all time.

A sea voyage in the nineteenth century was not for the faint-hearted. The hazards were many and accidents commonplace. Of the ways a ship might meet its end, destruction by fire was perhaps the most feared. Wooden sailing vessels were particularly vulnerable and without breathing apparatus it was next to impossible to fight a fire below decks. The period saw a number of catastrophic shipboard fires, but that involving the New Zealand-bound emigrant ship Cospatrick was certainly the most destructive. When she burned and sank off the coast of Southern Africa in 1874, nearly 500 people lost their lives. There was a desperate battle to quench the fire, a huge death toll as the vessel was being abandoned, and acts of cannibalism in the one lifeboat that remained afloat. This book is based on research carried out in Britain, New Zealand and Australia. While it relates the story of the Cospatrick and the nightmare survival of only three people, it also looks at the larger picture of safety at sea.

How universities enable change in the world, and how they need to change to perform that role even better.

This book describes the ways in which high quality universities are essential to underpinning the liberal civilization which has achieved so much. It identifies how universities help societies across the world to meet the increasingly pressing challenge of rapid and accelerating change and points to the ways in which they must change to play that role better.

Around the world there is increasing controversy about the ways in which universities function and should be financed. The challenges are rapidly increasing and this book addresses these issues and highlights the ways in which they can be tackled.

A leading authority on diabetes shares his highly successful program for revolutionizing the health of middle-aged men

Based on many years of experience in this area, Charles Clark puts forward a program that addresses key psychological and physical issues in a way that works for men. Practical, goal-orientated, and frank, the program will yield quick results in such areas as stress, weight--a crucial factor for this age group, cholesterol, and blood pressure. This health and body makeover for men doesn't involve obscure supplements, exercising to extremes, or fad diets. It presents a simple secret to losing one's gut--and it isn't quitting alcohol, explains why stress is a killer and how to tackle it, offers key steps to prevent high cholesterol and heart disease, outlines the simplest way to muscle-up and why it's particularly important in middle age, and tells readers how to deal with male menopause. This practical and easy program will appeal to male buyers as well as to women who want to improve the health of the men in their lives.

'For you the war is over'. 'Last of the Kriegies' tells the extraordinary stories of five of the last remaining Second World War RAF Bomber Command Prisoners-of-War: pilot Reg Barker, bomb aimer Charles Clarke, air gunner David Fraser, air gunner Albert Gunn and navigator Henry Wagner. Each veteran shares the journey they went through joining up with the Royal Air Force, their training and crewing up, and operational duties with RAF Bomber Command. We accompany them on raids over enemy territory as they fight to survive against the relentless flak, searchlights, and deadly enemy nightfighters. Eventually each airmen's next of kin receives a knock on the door and the dreaded 'regret to inform' you telegram. Reg, Charles, David, Albert and Henry describe the circumstances in which they are shot from the sky, descending by parachute in to hostile territory, and their subsequent failed attempt to avoid capture. Interrogation follows and we hear how the downed airmen negotiate the aggressive and devious tactics employed by their captors as they try and extract secret information. Our 'Kriegsgefangener' soon find themselves behind the barb wire of a German prison camp facing the trials and tribulations of daily life as a 'kriegie'; the battle with hunger and frustration, the baiting and harassing of prison guards, friendships made, and attempts to break out and escape their captivity. In the final months of the war some of our POWs endure the gruelling and harsh conditions of the forced 'Long March'. Despite frustrating delays, as the Nazi regime enters its final death throes, our airmen eventually taste the sweetness of liberation and journey home to loved ones and family. Fighting High Publishing and Bomber Command historian Steve Darlow present the extraordinary testimony of five veterans who endured and survived being shot down, captivity, degradation, and suffering. Illustrated with previously unpublished photographs and with a foreword from former Gulf War POW Squadron Leader Bob Ankerson RAF (Ret'd) 'Last of the Kriegie's' reveals the extraordinary strength and resilience of the human spirit struggling with incarceration and the loss of freedom.

Despite negative speculation in the media regarding the future of the low-carb diet, this revolutionary dietary phenomenon continues to attract an enormous following. The lure of the rapid weight loss causes converts to radically adjust their dietary habits in order to meet the demands of the lifestyle. Yet for many, this is simply not an option. Particularly ardent critics of the diet include vegetarians who are offered no alternatives to the high meat content; and what of those of us with a sweet tooth or those who need natural fibre in their diet? In this groundbreaking new work, Dr Charles Clark has devised a low-carb, low GI plan that caters for all types of dietary requirement. It's vegetarian-friendly and nutritionally-balanced, allowing for previously sinful foods including pasta, pulses, fruit and puddings. What's more, he has set out to counter the criticisms of those who argue that low-carb lifestyles can be detrimental to health. A series of medical case studies proves how adopting a low-carbohydrate diet can in fact be of benefit in certain key areas of health. So, if you feared you could never be part of the low-carb crowd, look no further-this is the diet for becoming slim and healthy the low-carb, low GI way, without cutting out the foods you love! 'We've all heard of Jen and Madonna using high protein diets to lose weight. It's a tricky one to follow safely, but with Prof Charles Clark's sensible approach-us mere mortals can do it too.'
