Moments of Clarity - Voices from the Front Lines of Addiction and Recover y (Paperback): Christopher Kennedy Lawford Moments of Clarity - Voices from the Front Lines of Addiction and Recover y (Paperback)
Christopher Kennedy Lawford
R360 R288 Discovery Miles 2 880 Save R72 (20%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

In his New York Times bestselling memoir, Symptoms of Withdrawal, Christopher Kennedy Lawford chronicled his deep descent into near-fatal drug and alcohol addiction, and his subsequent hard-won journey back to sobriety, which he has maintained for more than twenty years. The overwhelming response his book received impressed upon Lawford the number of people struggling to find their own way back from addiction and the need to share their stories. The histories gathered here are the recollections of lives snatched back from the brink of a precipice so wide and deep it threatened to engulf them.

Moments of Clarity includes stories from men and women, young and old, across all barriers of celebrity, color, and class. Represented in these pages are the singer and the actress, the writer and the anchorman, the man from the movie screen and the woman who lives down the street. This book brings together a myriad of different moments, all with the common understanding of where these men and women have been and where they must go. As they bravely share their stories, they shed light not only on their own experiences but also on the journey we all take as human beings who are trying to make sense of our world.

The book describes the current state of former opencast mines in six countries. The remediation and reclamation of abandoned opencast mines are considered as a chance for new sustainable ecological, sociological and cultural developments in the regions concerned. The examples quoted from different countries allow the results of different remediation strategies to be compared. By way of conclusion, some recommendations are given at the end.

Encouragement for a Man Falling to His Death (Paperback): Christopher Kennedy Encouragement for a Man Falling to His Death (Paperback)
Christopher Kennedy
R298 Discovery Miles 2 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Christopher Kennedy's poetry is funny, deadpan, self-effacing, and revelatory in the way of a man with nothing to lose. Mixing sonnets and prose poems, Kennedy lampoons the absurdities of contemporary American life using ironic fables and surreal parables. Kennedy's poems also reflect his obsession with the idea of transformation-from the ordinary to the extraordinary, from life to death. Christopher Kennedy is director of the Syracuse University MFA Program in Creative Writing. He has received writing awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Saltonstall Foundation. This is his third full-length poetry collection.

In this volume leading researchers present new work on the semantics and pragmatics of adjectives and adverbs, and their interfaces with syntax. Its concerns include the semantics of gradability; the relationship between adjectival scales and verbal aspect; the relationship between meaning and the positions of adjectives and adverbs in nominal and verbal projections; and the fine-grained semantics of different subclasses of adverbs and adverbs. Its goals are to provide a comprehensive vision of the linguistically significant structural and interpretive properties of adjectives and adverbs, to highlight the similarities between these two categories, and to signal the importance of a careful and detailed integration of lexical and compositional semantics.
The editors open the book with an overview of current research before introducing and contextualizing the remaining chapters. The work is aimed at scholars and advanced students of syntax, semantics, formal pragmatics, and discourse. It will also appeal to researchers in philosophy, psycholinguistics, and language acquisition interested in the syntax and semantics of adjectives and adverbs.

Argues that gradable adjectives -- like bright, dense, and short -- denote measure functions, that is functions from objects to abstract representations of measurement, or scales and degrees. Shows how that notion can provide a foundation for principled explanations of a wide range of syntactic and semantic properties of gradable adjectives and the constructions in which they appear, ranging from the syntactic distribution of gradable adjectives to the scopal characteristics of comparatives, and the empirical effects of adjectival polarity.

Christopher Kennedy University of Toronto, Department of Civil Engineering, 35 St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S IA4 Coal is a valuable resource. It provides a significant amount of the World's energy supply and it is the basis for many industries. However, in areas where coal lies close to the Earth's surface and has been exploited by open cast tech niques, radical alterations of landscape and significant impacts on the envi ronment have occurred. This report was prepared to provide guidance to those who are responsible for the prevention of environmental effects from surface mining and for the restoration of the mining areas. Environmental problems of surface coal mining and restoration of the mine sites are discussed in the re port. Particular attention is given to Eastern Europe, which continues to be a major centre of opencast lignite mining. Reclamation of mined lands for for estry, agriculture and wildlife is briefly discussed. However, the shear volume of coal removed from many mines in Eastern Europe is so vast, that there is often insufficient overburden material to refill the pits. Consequently, the main focus of this report is on the creation of lakes in these former surface mines. Many problems have to be overcome in creating healthy lakes for recreation or wildlife. Guidelines for treating water quality problems and further devel opment of lakes are provided. Techniques for dealing with acidic, waters, eutrophication and contamination are discussed."

The Evolution of Great World Cities - Urban Wealth and Economic Growth (Paperback, New): Christopher Kennedy The Evolution of Great World Cities - Urban Wealth and Economic Growth (Paperback, New)
Christopher Kennedy
R719 Discovery Miles 7 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Some cities seem destined to become major financial capitals, yet never do--Seville, for instance, was the centre of Spain's opulent New World Empire, but failed to become a financial metropolis. Others, like former colonial backwater Hong Kong, defy the odds by growing into major trading centres. What are the key factors distinguishing those cities that become wealthy from those that don't? Christopher Kennedy illuminates how geography, technology, and especially the infrastructure of urban economies allow cities to develop and thrive. The Evolution of Great World Cities unfolds through the tales of several urban centres--including Venice, Amsterdam, London, and New York City--at key junctures in their histories. Kennedy weaves together significant insights from urbanists such as Jane Jacobs and economists such as John Maynard Keynes, drawing striking parallels between the functioning of ecosystems and of wealthy capitals. The Evolution of Great World Cities offers an accessible introduction to urban economies that 'will change the way you think about cities.'

Ancient Truths for Modern Times (Paperback): Christopher Kennedy Ancient Truths for Modern Times (Paperback)
Christopher Kennedy
R401 Discovery Miles 4 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Does what you believe matter? In our society, some will say, "Not really. It doesn't matter what you believe as long as you believe something, or as long as you're sincere." The Christian faith says something different. It says what you believe matters. Doctrine matters. Truth matters. What you believe determines your actions and, of utmost concern for Christians, your eternal destination. This book gives an overview of what Christians have believed for a long, long time and why those truths matter for us today. The book follows the structure of an ancient confession of faith, the Apostles' Creed. The teachings of Christianity speak an enduring word to us, a word that often defies our feelings and transcends our circumstances. The teachings of the faith lift our sights from the here and now to the eternal perspective of what God has done for us and who He has made us to be. Does what you believe matter? Yes, it does. Very much.
