This volume contains invited lectures and contributed papers
presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Mathematical
Modeling in Combustion and related topics, held in. Lyon (France),
April 27 - 30, 1987. This conference was planned to fit in with the
two-month visit of Professor G.S.S. Ludford to the Ecole Centrale
de Lyon. He kindly agreed to chair the Scientific and Organizing
Committee and actively helped to initiate the meeting. His death in
December 1986 is an enormous loss to the scientific community in
general, and in particular, to the people involved in the present
enterprise. The subject of mathematical modeling in combustion is
too large for a single conference, and the selection of topics re
flects both areas of recent research activity and areas of in
terest to Professor G.S.S. Ludford, to whose memory the Advanced
Workshop and this present volume are dedicated. The meeting was
divided into seven specialized sessions detonation theory,
mathematical analysis, numerical treatment of combustion problems,
flame theory, experimental and industrial aspects, complex
chemistry, and turbulent combustion. It brought together
researchers and engineers from University and Industry (see below
the closing remarks of the workshop by Prof. N. Peters). The
articles in this volume have been judged and accepted on their
scientific quality, and language corrections may have been
sacrificed in order to allow quick dissemination of knowledge to
prevail."

The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in
copper based oxides is an event of major importance not only with
respect to the physical phenomenon itself but also because it
definitely shows that solid state chemistry, and especially the
crystal chemistry of oxides, has a crucial place in the synthesis
and understanding of new materials for future appli cations. The
numerous papers published in the field of high Tc supercon ductors
in the last five years demonstrate that the great complexity of
these materials necessitates a close collaboration between
physicists and solid state chemists. This book is based to a large
extent on our experience of the crystal chemistry of copper oxides,
which we have been studying in the laboratory for more than twelve
years, but it also summarizes the main results which have been
obtained for these compounds in the last five years relating to
their spectacular superconducting properties. We have focused on
the struc ture, chemical bonding and nonstoichiometry of these
materials, bearing in mind that redox reactions are the key to the
optimization of their supercon ducting properties, owing to the
importance of the mixed valence of copper and its Jahn-Teller
effect. We have also drawn on studies of extended defects by
high-resolution electron microscopy and on their creation by ir
radiation effects."

"To love is to act"-- "Aimer, c'est agir." These words, which
Victor Hugo wrote three days before he died, epitomize his life's
philosophy. His love of freedom, democracy, and all
people--especially the poor and wretched--drove him not only to
write his epic Les Miserables but also to follow his conscience. We
have much to learn from Hugo, who battled for justice, lobbied
against slavery and the death penalty, and fought for the rights of
women and children. In a series of essays that interweave Hugo's
life with Les Miserables and point to the novel's contemporary
relevance, To Love Is to Act explores how Hugo reveals his guiding
principles for life, including his belief in the redemptive power
of love and forgiveness. Enriching the book are insights from
artists who captured the novel's heart in the famed musical, Les
Mis creators Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenberg, producer
of the musical Les Miserables Cameron Mackintosh, film director Tom
Hooper, and award-winning actors who have portrayed Jean Valjean:
Colm Wilkinson and Hugh Jackman.

A particular solution for any inhomogeneous linear second, third,
and fourth order ordinary differential equation is generally
determined. Applying what was determined thus; and following by
example a particular solution formula for arbitrary order is
obtained. Finding a particular solutions to a linear inhomogeneous
ordinary differential equation has always been a process of
determining homogeneous solutions, and then adding any particular
solution of the inhomogeneous equation. The well-known methods of
undetermined coefficients and variation of parameters have long
been the standard in determining this particular solution. The
former has sometimes been considered 'ad-hoc', and both can be
intricate. A relatively simple formuila has been found which allows
the particular solution to be written and evaluated immediately.
