Poet, philosopher, and critic, Samuel Taylor Coleridge is now best remembered for the extraordinary "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Kubla Khan." With his friend William Wordsworth he founded the Romantic movement--theirs was one of the most productive and creative partnerships in the history of English literature; together with Robert Southey, they became known as the Lake Poets. Daniel Hahn traces the history of Coleridge's life, his intense friendship with William and Mary Wordsworth, his travels through Europe, failed marriage, and crippling addiction to opium. He reveals the inspiration for Coleridge's greatest works, and proffers insightful extracts from the poet's compositions. The result is a succinct and rounded portrayal of this great writer.

'I don't expect anyone to believe me,' warns the narrator of this novel, a Mexican student called Juan Pablo Villalobos. He is about to fly to Barcelona on a scholarship when he's kidnapped in a bookshop and whisked away by thugs to a basement. The gangsters are threatening his cousin-a wannabe entrepreneur known to some as 'Projects' and to others as 'dickhead' - who is gagged and tied to a chair. The thugs say Juan Pablo must work for them. His mission? To make Laia, the daughter of a corrupt politician, fall in love with him. He accepts . . . though not before the crime boss has forced him at gunpoint into a discussion on the limits of humour in literature. Part campus novel, part gangster thriller, I Don't Expect Anyone to Believe Me is Villalobos at his best. Exuberantly foul-mouthed and intellectually agile, this hugely entertaining novel finds the light side of difficult subjects - immigration, corruption, family loyalty and love - in a world where the difference between comedy and tragedy depends entirely on who's telling the joke.

I'm Arthur, and I'm seven. In the summer, I really like staying with my grandparents by Picket Lake, but in the winter I can get a bit bored. This year, it was even colder and icier that normal. Grandpa told me all about the time he won a medal in the Great Crossing of Picket Lake. Then Cousin Eugene an idea. But ice-skating was harder than it looked. Arthur is a seven-year-old boy who is brilliant at being a seven-year-old-boy. When Arthur visits his grandparents' house by the lake, more often than not, he becomes entangled in a new adventure, which he must solve with the help of his pet duck and useless dog - and hopefully without too much help from eccentric Cousin Eugene. These are witty stories full of understated humour and populated by quirky yet recognisable characters, and narrated by Arthur who has the rational worldview that comes exclusively from being seven-years-old. - REVIEWS OF ARTHUR AND THE ICE RINK - "Perfect for new readers, these stories, narrated by Arthur himself, are perfectly pitched so young readers will readily identify with Arthur, a likeable character" -- PARENTS IN TOUCH. "Arthur and the Ice Rink by Johanne Mercier is a short book about seven-year-old Arthur and told by him. When he goes to visit his grandparents, Arthur is disappointed that there is no ice-rink, but he has reckoned without clever cousin Eugene. The easy and funny little tale is ideal for newly fluent readers who will enjoy both the words and the pictures" -- THE SCOTSMAN. "Amusing, easy to follow adventures, these are very age-appropriate, reader-friendly books...a very good series for the target age group" -- THE SCHOOL LIBRARIAN. "A great little series for newly independent readers. Short and simple, yet engaging and fun, this is a perfect series for children to try to attempt on their own. The illustrations help break the text and help set the humorous atmosphere. Arthur is a loveable and quirky character who will appeal to both boys and girls." -- LIBRARY MICE.

I'm Arthur and I'm seven, and the other day at Picket Lake, I found the best thing ever: a secret hoard of blueberries! I picked millions of them as a surprise for Grandma. The restaurant is crowded and noisy. The man sits by the window, watching the grey sky, bored, as he is every Monday morning. Suddenly he turns and she's there, standing in front of him. Years have passed since he last saw her, since the day he left, without an explanation, without a reason. Only now does he realize he never stopped loving her, even for a second. When she tries to run away from him, too shocked by the sudden onslaught of emotions, he stops her. And as they embrace, surrounded by passersby, they promise to hold on, to make mistakes again. To love each other. Deeply and forever.

With his intimate, almost whispered style, Pedro Chagas Freitas takes the reader on a journey to discover the truth about love; the kind of love that touches, envelops and thrills you, that conceals and reveals, that wounds and heals, that seizes you and sets you free.

Publishers Weekly "Top 10 Book of the Year" selection "Begins as entertaining slapstick, subtly metamorphoses into fable. . . . As [the narrator's] vivid imaginary world fuses with reality this deceptively ethereal novel advances toward a dark and startling finale." --Wall Street Journal Laid off from his job, Damian Lobo obsessively imagines himself as a celebrity being interviewed on TV. After committing an act of petty theft at an antiques market, he finds himself trapped inside a wardrobe and delivered to the seemingly idyllic home of a husband, wife, and their internet-addicted teenage daughter. There, he sneaks from the shadows to serve as an invisible butler, becoming deeply and disastrously involved with his unknowing host family. Every thread of the plot is ingeniously tied together, creating a potent admixture of parable, love story, and thriller. Millas masterfully reveals the everyday as innately surreal as he renders the unbelievable tangible and the trivial fantastical, and full of dark humor. Juan Jose Millas is the recipient of Spain's most prestigious literary prizes: the Premio Nadal, Premio Planeta, and Premio Nacional de Narrativa. A regular contributor to El Pais, Millas has also won many awards for his journalism. He is the author of several short story collections and works of nonfiction as well as over a dozen novels, including From the Shadows, the first of his novels to be published in North America. He lives in Madrid.

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the deaths of William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, And Other Stories and Hay Festival have selected twelve contemporary international authors to each write an original and previously unpublished story as their tribute to these giants of world literature. In order to celebrate the international influence of both writers and offer us new and intriguing perspectives on them, six English-speaking authors have taken inspiration from Cervantes and his work, while six Spanish-language authors have written stories inspired by Shakespeare. The authors are Ben Okri, Deborah Levy, Kamila Shamsie, Yuri Herrera, Marcos Giralt Torrente, Juan Gabriel Vasquez, Vicente Molina Foix, Soledad Puertolas, Hisham Matar, Nell Leyshon, Rhidian Brook and Valeria Luiselli. An introduction by Salman Rushdie explores the liberating legacy of Cervantes and Shakespeare for contemporary fiction.

Nelson Falcao Rodrigues (August 23, 1912 - December 21, 1980) was a Brazilian playwright, journalist and novelist. In 1943, he helped usher in a new era in Brazilian theater with his play Vestido de Noiva (Wedding Dress), considered revolutionary for the complex exploration of its characters' psychology and its use of colloquial dialogue. He went on to write many other seminal plays and today is widely regarded as Brazil's greatest playwright. This volume contains brand-new translations of the plays Wedding Dress; Waltz No. 6; All Nudity Will Punished; Forgive Me for Your Betrayal; Family Portraits; Black Angel and Seven Little Kitties.

A #1 international bestseller reminiscent of the works of Roberto Bolano, Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and Edward Rutherford--a page-turning historical epic, set in early eighteenth-century Spain, about a military mastermind whose betrayal ultimately leads to the conquest of Barcelona, from the globally popular Catalonian writer Albert Sanchez Pinol.

Why do the weak fight against the strong? At 98, Marti Zuviria ponders this question as he begins to tell the extraordinary tale of Catalonia and its annexation in 1714. No one knows the truth of the story better, for Marti was the very villain who betrayed the city he was commended to keep.

The story of Catalonia and Barcelona is also Marti's story. A prestigious military engineer in the early 1700s, he fought on both sides of the long War of the Spanish Succession between the Two Crowns--France and Spain--and aided an Allied enemy in resisting the consolidation of those two powers. Politically ambitious yet morally weak, Marti carefully navigates a sea of Machiavellian intrigue, eventually rising to a position of power that he will use for his own mercenary ends.

A sweeping tale of heroism, treason, war, love, pride, and regret that culminates in the tragic fall of a legendary city, illustrated with battle diagrams, portraits of political figures, and priceless maps of the old city of Barcelona, Victus is a magnificent literary achievement that is sure to be hailed as an instant classic.
