To what extent should the doctrine of the separation of powers
evolve in light of recent shifts in constitutional design and
practice? New constitutions often include newer forms of rights -
such as socio-economic and environmental rights - and are written
with an explicitly transformative purpose. The practice of the
separation of powers has also changed, as the executive has tended
to gain power and deliberative bodies like legislatures have often
been thrown into a state of crisis. By engaging widespread
comparative experiences from Malawi, to Colombia, Mexico to South
Africa, Hungary to the United States of America, this examination
of the doctrine of the separation of powers takes into account
important recent changes in constitutional design and practice,
including the wide-spread inclusion of socio-economic rights, the
creation of independent bodies outside the traditional structure,
the growth of executive power, and the crisis of legislative
legitimacy. It also considers the extent to which this re-framing
should be confined to the emerging democracies of the global south
or whether it can be applied more widely across all constitutional
systems. This comprehensive study will be of interest to academics
conducting research in comparative constitutional law, students of
comparative constitutional law, and constitutional and political
theorists as well as constitutional judges and designers.

Next Level Screenwriting is an intermediate screenwriting book, for
those that have already learned the basics of screenwriting,
written a screenplay or two and want to bring their writing and
stories to the next level. Each chapter of the book examines a
specific aspect of screenwriting, such as character, dialogue and
theme, and then provides the reader with ideas, tips and
inspiration to apply to their own writing. Rather than being
another "how to" book, this volume features a variety of case
studies and challenging exercises throughout - derived from a broad
selection of successful feature films and TV shows from the 1940s
to the present day - to help spark the imagination of the writer as
they work through different styles and approaches of screenwriting.
An absolute must-read for any screenwriter wanting to improve their
writing and storytelling skills.
A comic tribute to the detective films of Humphrey Bogart. The
third story in the "Cafe Noir" series, following Murder at Cafe
Noir and Noir Suspicions. No knowledge of the previous plays is
required, as each play can stand alone. In Noir Point Blank, "Just
Plain" Rick has hired a singer and opened a photo display of "300
yrs of shady business" at the cafe to increase business. To this
comes an American detective looking for a murderess but stumbling
across a gangster on the lam, a beautiful French historian and a
British lawyer with a desire to go night diving. When the murderess
ends up dead and the cop is implicated in the murder, it's "Just
Plain" Rick who must help him out of the jam by helping him find
the real killer. Meanwhile, the gangster has assumed the mortgage
for the Cafe Noir and plans on setting up his operations there, and
everyone seems to be after something that sunk off the coast of
Mustique in 1945. It's a true forties style American mystery with
the perfect mix of action, intrigue, humor, and romance.

Law is fast globalizing as a field, and many lawyers, judges and
political leaders are engaged in a process of comparative
"borrowing". But this new form of legal globalization has
darksides: it is not just a source of inspiration for those seeking
to strengthen and improve democratic institutions and policies. It
is increasingly an inspiration - and legitimation device - for
those seeking to erode democracy by stealth, under the guise of a
form of faux liberal democratic cover. Abusive Constitutional
Borrowing: Legal globalization and the subversion of liberal
democracy outlines this phenomenon, how it succeeds, and what we
can do to prevent it. This book address current patterns of
democratic retrenchment and explores its multiple variants and
technologies, considering the role of legitimating ideologies that
help support different modes of abusive constitutionalism. An
important contribution to both legal and political scholarship,
this book will of interest to all those working in the legal and
political disciplines of public law, constitutional theory,
political theory, and political science.
We can't shoot good pictures without good lighting, no matter how
good the newest cameras are. Shooting under available light gives
exposure, but lacks depth, contrast, contour, atmosphere and often
separation. The story could be the greatest in the world, but if
the lighting is poor viewers will assume it's amateurish and not
take it seriously. Feature films and TV shows, commercials and
industrial videos, reality TV and documentaries, even event and
wedding videos tell stories. Good lighting can make them look real,
while real lighting often makes them look fake. Lighting for
Cinematography, the first volume in the new CineTech Guides to the
Film Crafts series, is the indispensable guide for film and video
lighting. Written by veteran gaffer and cinematographer David
Landau, the book helps the reader create lighting that supports the
emotional moment of the scene, contributes to the atmosphere of the
story and augments an artistic style. Structured to mimic a 14 week
semester, the chapters cover such things as lighting for movement,
working with windows, night lighting, lighting the three plains of
action and non-fiction lighting. Every chapter includes stills,
lighting diagrams and key advice from professionals in the field,
as well as lighting exercises to help the reader put into practice
what was covered. www.lightingforcinematography.com

Lorna Crawford has a great boyfriend, longtime friends, and a
well-paying job as special- events coordinator at a premium
ice-cream manufacturer. But, out of sorts and filled with
self-doubt, the 33 year old soon realizes that what she really
wants is to stay on the spiritual path she keeps diving off of.
Lorna jump-starts her efforts at a silent yoga retreat. But after
returning from the mountain, she quickly loses her connection in
the face of scheming coworkers, judgmental girlfriends, and,
especially, her overly critical mother. Lorna also wrestles over
her future with her boyfriend, a hot guy who takes her to the
hottest places, but who can t discern a meditation cushion from a
toad stool. Reading spiritual books and visiting a channeler and

's seeking is put to the ultimate test when personal tragedy

has little to do with how you pretzel yourself on the yoga mat
(although she gets plenty good at that), and everything to do with
embracing the twists in everyday life?
How delicious to find a novel for women who find spirituality
every bit as enticing as fashion. The characters in Meryl Davids
Landau 's page-turner aren t the only ones uplifted here the reader
gets a dose of inspiration along with a mesmerizing story.

This book provides in English the case law of the Colombian
Constitutional Court, which has become one of the most creative and
important courts of the global south and the world since its
creation in 1991. It offers concise and carefully chosen extracts
of the Court's most important cases, along with notes and
introductory materials to place them in historical and comparative
context. The book covers the Court's landmark rights jurisprudence,
including the decriminalization of drug possession, the
legalization of same-sex marriage, the protection of social rights
through broad structural orders such as the ones covering
internally displaced persons and the right to health. It also
covers the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples to
cultural autonomy and to be consulted before economic projects are
undertaken on their land, and the rights of victims of the
country's long-running internal armed conflict to truth, justice,
and reparations. Also provided are the Court's most noteworthy
structural cases, particularly its successful attempt to limit the
use of states of exception and its substitution of the constitution
doctrine, which allows it to strike down amendments that replace
rather than amending core principles of the existing constitutional
order. The materials focus on the Court's contributions in a
comparative perspective, showing how they are exemplary of a range
of problems faced by courts around the world and particularly as an
example of aggressive judicial review by the courts of the global
south. At the same time, they demonstrate how many of the Court's
key cases - such as the judicial review of the peace process with
guerrilla groups or the striking down of an amendment to allow a
popular president to seek a third term - are reactions to the
historical features of the Colombian legal and social landscape.
