This book explores the historical and cultural significance of
comics in languages other than English, examining the geographic
and linguistic spheres which these comics inhabit and their
contributions to comic studies and academia. The volume brings
together texts across a wide range of genres, styles and geographic
locations including the Netherlands, Latin America, Greece, Sweden,
Poland, Finland, Portugal, Ireland, the Czech Republic, among
others. These works have remained out of reach for speakers of
languages other than the original and do not receive the scholarly
attention they deserve due to their lack of English translations.
This book highlights the richness and diversity these works add to
the corpus of comic art and comic studies that Anglophone comics
scholars can access to broaden the collective perspective of the
field and forge links across regions, genres and comic traditions.
Part of the Global Perspectives in Comics Studies series, this
volume spans many continents and languages. It will be of interest
to researchers and students of comics studies, literature, cultural
studies, popular culture, art and design, illustration, history,
film studies and sociology.
Giving My All captures the journey of Earl Martin Phalen as he
navigates family, self-identity and purpose. As a black boy adopted
into a large, loving Irish Catholic family at age two, Earl
discovered at a young age that he was meant to stand out. Yet
whether it was on the basketball court or early in his career as a
young and ambitious "edupreneur," Earl encountered opportunities
that required him to give his all, but often found himself holding
back. Earl faced both subtle and overt racism in his predominantly
white neighborhoods, but with the love and unrelenting support of
his family, he was able to overcome much-facing it most directly
and intentionally for the first time when he arrived on Yale campus
as a young athlete scholar. While at Yale, Earl gained a new sense
of pride and purpose as he connected with his black and African
American heritage. This would continue throughout his studies and
into graduate school at Harvard Law, where his calling to
education-particularly that of black and brown children-came to
life. Earl has dedicated his life to improving the access poor,
black and brown children have to quality education and
opportunities.

The first comprehensive study of Knoll's innovative textile designs
and the company's role within the history of interior design In
1940, Hans Knoll founded a company in New York that soon earned a
reputation for its progressive line of furniture. Florence Schust
joined the firm and helped establish its interior design division,
the Knoll Planning Unit. In 1947, the year after their marriage,
Hans and Florence Knoll added a third division, Knoll Textiles,
which brought textile production in line with a modern sensibility
that used color and texture as primary design elements. In the
early years, the company hired leading proponents of modern design
as well as young, untried designers to create textile patterns. The
division thrived in the late 1940s through 1960s and, in the
following decade, adopted a more international outlook as design
direction shifted to Europe. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Knoll
tapped fashion designers and architects to bolster its brand. The
pioneering use of new materials and a commitment to innovative
design have remained Knoll's hallmarks to the present day. With
essays by experts, biographies of about eighty designers, and
images of textiles, drawings, furniture, and ephemera, Knoll
Textiles, 1945-2010 is the first comprehensive study devoted to a
leading contributor to modern textile design. Highlighting the
individuals and ideas that helped shape Knoll Textiles over the
years, this book brings the Knoll brand and the role of textiles in
the history of design to the forefront of public attention.
