Meanwhile Bert and Al Large face challenges of their own, with brewing whisky and running a B&B not quite turning out as they had hoped; Mrs Tishell suffers a terrible and unexpected setback in her life; and Penhale, already facing romantic challenges, faces a mini crime spree and decides to host a Police Open Day. Newcomers to the village include a new curate as well as Morwenna’s parents, Jack and Tara who worked as missionaries in Kenya; and the village sees the return of Beth, the American tourist and veterinarian Angela Sim. And swimming through the maelstrom of it all is Doctor Ellingham, suffering humanity’s foibles with little tolerance and suffering literally with a newly adopted dog, against his better judgment, underfoot

Darker and more intense than the first collection, these six stories uncover the secrets behind ordinary suburban lives. From Patricia Routledge's Miss Fozzard, whose new chiropodist turns out to be rather peculiar, to Eileen Atkins' portryal of an antiques dealer who lets a masterpiece slip through her fingers, the characters come alive through Bennett's writing. These tales of desperation and loneliness are handled with the lightness of touch, compassion and shrewdly observed detail that have made Alan Bennett one of the country's best-loved writers. The stories included are: 'Miss Fozzard Finds Her Feet' read by Patricia Routledge; 'The Hand of God' read by Eileen Atkins; 'Playing Sandwiches' read by David Haig; 'The Outside Dog' read by Julie Walters; 'Nights in the Gardens of Spain' read by Penelope Wilton and 'Waiting for the Telegram' read by Thora Hird. 3 CDs. 3 hrs 22 mins.
'This book is going to be a hit, and can only consolidate Duffy's position as one of the most widely read British poets of her generation'. - Robert Crawford, "Herald". 'It sparkles with wit, intelligence and an impressive lightness of touch, while drawing on some weighty emotional experiences: loneliness, jealousy, self-loathing, desire, the fierceness of a mother's love.' - Christina Patterson, "Independent". 'She reveals the foibles of the great, the ghastly and the ordinary bloke and the sufferings of those closest to them. The result is a melange of history lesson, fairy-tale and modern-day domestic tragedy, with the occasional joke thrown in for good measure...Duffy's poetics are flawless - she never misses a beat, her pace is exhilarating, and her language is original and exciting'. - "Scotsman". 'These thirty poems vibrate with intense colloquialisms, physicality, energy, freshness and cheek. Many of them are very funny...the best are inventive, subversive and written with great rhythmical and rhyming dash.' - "Sunday Telegraph".
