The first volume of the series chronicling the work of architects
gmp * Von Gerkan, Marg and Partner was published in 1978, while
2008 saw the publication of the eleventh and most recent volume in
the series. More than a decade later, the series is at last picking
up where it left off: volume twelve of the monograph documents the
projects built between 2007 and 2011, including numerous sports
facilities around the world, from the three stadiums erected for
the soccer world championships in 2010 in Cape Town, Port
Elizabeth, and Durban, South Africa; to the buildings for the World
University Games in 2011 in Shenzhen, China; to the Olympic stadium
in Kiev. Those, however, are just a few of the sixty-five projects
found in this richly illustrated volume: transportation facilities
such as the Hamburg Airport and the West Train Station in Tianjin,
China, as well as iconic cultural buildings such as the Chinese
National Museum, the Hanoi Museum, the China Maritime Museum in
Lingang, and the grand theatres in Chongqing and Qingdao are also
detailed. Languages: German and English

Amsterdam-based architects Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos,
principals of UNStudio, are stars of the international architecture
scene. Culling from a pool of interdisciplinary experts, UNStudio
seeks to make a significant contribution to the discipline of
architecture, to continue to develop our qualities with respect to
design, technology, knowledge and management and to be a specialist
in public network projects. We see as mutually sustaining the
environment, market demands and client wishes that enable our work,
and we aim for results in which our goals and our client's goals
overlap. The outcome of their self-defined goals are apparent in
dynamic buildings like Five Franklin Place, a residential building
completed in 2007 in New York's TriBeCa neighborhood, which
expresses a nuanced conceptual and technical complexity and
confidence while also providing a must-see architectural
experience. This volume reveals UNStudio's process, in which a
sense of place is seamlessly integrated with aesthetic and
conceptual considerations.
As one of the most famous German architectural practices,
Stuttgart-based Lederer & Ragnarsdottir & Oei (LRO) has
distinguished itself through dramatic, sweeping facades and unique
forms that have had wide popular appeal but haven't always adhered
to what is fashionable. Their statement is clear and iconoclastic:
"Creating a locality is absolutely crucial to our projects. To do
that, architecture does not have to be reinvented by force.
Instead, we try to learn from the long tradition of building
without falling into historicism." Of their numerous successful
projects, the best known are Darmstadt's State Theatre, the EVS
Central Administration in Stuttgart and the Salem International
College in Uberlingen. This copiously illustrated volume, the
second in the "Portfolio" series, introduces a cross-section of
work with commentary by writer and architecture critic Falk Jaeger.
The origins of the architecture office nps tchoban voss go back as
far as 1931. Founded in Hamburg, the group practice now also has
offices in Berlin and Dresden and is one of the most active and
successful offices in each of the three cities. Quality living and
work environments and attractive and stimulating urban and personal
surroundings can only be created by taking a holistic approach to
planning that encompasses the entire spectrum of environmental
design, from urban design to the building details. For the
architects, the principle of sustainability applies not only to
construction but must also be seen as an aesthetic category. This
book shows examples of the office's recent projects that reveal how
nps tchoban voss applies their notion of quality from the scale of
the local neighbourhood to the design of interiors, and how at a
formal level, they continue to create modern architecture that
eschews short-lived architectural fashions in favor of creating
economic architecture of lasting aesthetic value.
SPEECH Tchoban & Kuznetsov is a trendsetting and international
architectural office in Moscow. The architects - the German Sergei
Tchoban born in St. Petersburg and Sergey Kuznetsov from Moscow -
are rooted equally in Western and Eastern Europe with their
architecture and engage in applying the building culture values of
each of these cultural spheres to the other. In Russia there is
demand for functionality and planning culture, as well as western
building standards in terms of expertise and technology, whilst in
the west the architects see the need to fill the gap as regards
architecture as an art form, emotionality, and love of
ornamentation. They publicize their views on building culture and
building standards through their own bilingual architecture
magazine called "speech", exhibition activities, and a design for
the Museum of Architectural Graphics in Berlin, as well as through
their many buildings and urban development plans in Russia. The
book presents the philosophy, values and themes of the SPEECH
project and shows how they were concretely put into practice in the
buildings created by the office.
Over the last 20 years architecture in and from Berlin has emerged
as a global brand. Like Vol. 1, this new edition of Architecture
Berlin showcases the most interesting 70 new buildings in and
outside of the German capital. Each project is presented on the
basis of informative texts, the most important facts as well as
insightful photographic and planning documents. The contextual
essays for each of the eight sections in this volume cover a wide
and interesting range of subjects. While Sarah Tschernigow compares
metro systems in cities such as Berlin, Shanghai, Stockholm and
Dubai, Falk Jaeger discusses the relevance of drawings and sketches
for the contemporary work of the architect. In his contribution
Gerwin Zohlen analyses the urban functions of the current and
future government buildings in Berlin and the different impacts
they have on the city.
