A collection of four classic films starring Julie Christie. In 'Billy Liar' (1963), undertaker's clerk Billy (Tom Courtenay) escapes his dreary small town existence in a 1950s Northern town by living in a fantasy world where he realises his ambitions. When his job, unsympathetic working class family and two fiancees threaten to become too much, he meets the fashionable Liz (Christie), who offers him his one chance for real escape. Christie won an Oscar for her role in 'Darling' (1965). In the film she plays Diana Scott, an ambitious model determined to make it to the top. Using her sexuality, she manipulates powerful men, but in so doing becomes a prisoner of the jet-setting lifestyle she once yearned for. Dirk Bogarde co-stars as Diana's long-suffering boyfriend. 'Far From The Madding Crowd' (1967) is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's 19th-century story of a woman's passion. Bathsheba (Christie) is in love with three very different men who are also in love with her: her first love is a handsome and wayward soldier; the second is the local noble Lord, and the third is an ever-patient farmer. 'The Go-Between' (1970) is an adaptation of the classic novel by L.P. Hartley. A young teenage boy, Leo (Dominic Guard), is invited to a wealthy school friend's rich family estate and is drawn into a love affair between his friend's twenty-something sister, Marian (Christie), and the family neighbour, even though she is engaged to be married. She uses Leo as a go-between, sending messages to her lover. Despite feeling he is betraying her fiance Hugh (Edward Fox), Leo carries on being the messager boy and discovers more about the attraction between men and women along the way.

Three films from legendary American director David Lynch. In 'The Elephant Man' (1980), John Merrick (John Hurt) is a brutalised man, treated as a freak since childhood because of his appalling physical deformities, until he is discovered by London doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins), who treats him with the kindness and intelligence he deserves. Unfortunately, by awakening his true character the problems continue, for he can never lead a 'normal' life. In 'Mulholland Drive' (2001), having narrowly survived a murder attempt and a car crash, a shocked and wounded woman (Laura Elena Harring) takes refuge in a nearby apartment. When she is discovered the next morning by the apartment's official resident, aspiring actress Betty Elms (Naomi Watts), she confesses that she neither knows who she is nor what happened to her. The two women then begin to investigate, and it gradually becomes clear that they have known each other in the past. Meanwhile, a young film director (Justin Theroux) finds that the mob are taking an unusual interest in the casting of his latest film. Finally, in 'Inland Empire' (2006), Laura Dern plays Nikki Grace, an ingenue actress whose latest role in a Tennessee Williams-esque fright of a film tests her to her limits. A parallel storyline shows an earlier attempt to make this film in Poland which ended in tragedy when the two lead players were offed.

It's Christmas time in Royston Vasey, the little northern town whose proud motto is 'You'll Never Leave', and this special full-length episode has a darkly Dickensian yuletide flavour. We are presented with a complex tableau of stories delivered to Royston Vasey's vicar Bernice by a variety of strangers who visit her church. In flashback we are shown the terrible secret behind Dr Chinnery's always fatal attempts at veteninary surgery. Back in the present, and taking a sideswipe at Stanley Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut', the endlessly warring couple Stella and Charlie try to resolve their dysfunction, and Stella visits a strange masked group called 'Solutions' in the hope of using voodoo to get rid of her husband. Finally we travel back to visit a younger Herr Lipp, the vicious pederast, who is captured here leading a choir of small boys in the small German town of Duisberg; but what will he do to the young lad who asks if he may come to visit this Christmas?
