In spite of the 200+ years of clothing production evolution in the US, and several challenges posed by outsourcing for cheaper labour supplies, New York has remained America's fashion capital. Much like the fashion regions that would later develop around production in Italy, within New York an entire community of design, production, distribution, commerce and marketing existed. Skilled workers of Jewish and Italian descent, the giant retailers and department stores, the publishers, the advertising agencies, the design offices, the bohemian trend setting arts scene, the model agencies, and the factories all combined to form an eco-system that has managed to create a lasting American footprint on the world's fashion walk of fame, giving us fashion titans such as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Tom Ford. The most incandescent example of Bombshells is Marilyn Monroe. Her strange combination of ghostly pale skin, childlike face and innate erotic cunning render her hard to date. Unlike modern actresses we can't sense the stylist in her clothes, the heavy hand of a makeup artist or a photographer's over bearing concept. Clearly and hauntingly, her image belongs to her and it is equal parts spectral nymph, mid century beach bunny, haughty heiress and child star. With an hourglass body and a face like Shirley Temple the oddity of Monroe is her wholesomeness. She could sell diamonds or milk. She looked naked in a white cotton dress and perfectly dignified in the nude. She her clothes. Some say she sawed off one stiletto shoe heel a fraction lower to deepen the sway of her hips. Clearly she wasn't happy, and this just serves to deepen the myth and her lure. Her own words, "Being a sex symbol is heavy load" could speak for all of the women who traded infamy for scandal and some scrap of security. Bettie Page, the underground queen of silk stockings, light bondage and leopard skin bikinis claimed very practical reasons for being a pin-up model, preferring the work to "pounding a typewriter eight hours a day." They were a breed that we have not seen the like of again. Bombshells. It is said that music gives a soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything. Before Rock there was Rock and Roll... Elvis Presley came out of nowhere, hip snaking onto an almost empty stage, with Little Richard, black and gay, lurking in the wings. He singlehandedly took he underbelly of America... dirt-poor greaser, glorifying it. Elvis was all four Jungian archetypes rolled into one - the child- the wise man, the fool or trickster and lastly, the sexual being, desirable, yet unobtainable. In his wake spawning countless scores of look and sound alikes. In this edition we feature the man himself as well as the mighty Creedence Clearwater Revival, Deep Purple, Foo Fighters, Guns n Roses and the indefatigable Iggy Pop. In this the third of our Music Series, and the first on Pop music we present our giant hard covered picture book on the careers of the biggest names in Pop. Pop is an abbreviation of the word popular, it doesn't mean good or tasteful, it just means popular. Pop Music is a reflection of it's time... if contemporary society deems to crown a suburban mime artist as reigning Queen of Pop then so be it. Pop has come a long way since it's early bleating's, from the anthemic teen angst of the early sixties, to the languid internalization of Coldplay and the airbrushed soul of Beyonce . Pop is now blurred into red carpet supermarket magazines, slotted betweenweight loss and divorces. It's hard work staying there, staying on top, as Michael Jackson was to find, from his troubled child stardom with the Jackson Five, to his emperor's new clothes period, culminating in his eventual death by media. That he managed to survive for over thirty years on top is an accomplishment in anyone's eyes. One could ask the question, will Justin Bieber exist, after, or even before I finish writing this introduction? Although Britney Spears, ex Disney child star, for a brief moment, tween, then teen poppet, sexed herself into prehab as well as rehab and our ever-eager wallets. Even Britney's old alumni Justin Timberlake, the everyman next door, now reinvented into a GQ supplement, is still known to exist, although, sadly the sartorial elegance of the talented Andre 3000 front man of the band Outkast, burst onto the scene then promptly burst out. Jennifer Lopez career jellied her name out of a contract, flirting with the silver screen, whilst conducting a well-publicized supermarket affair with Sean "Puffy" Holmes. There were crossovers - Shakira and Ricky Martin, humanitariansboth, credibly reworked Latin, ex Hawaiian Bruno Mars made reggae fusion accessible to the masses, Rihanna moved from Barbados at the age of 16 to the U.S. becoming one of the best selling artists of all time at the tender age of 24. Since we can remember people have been talking about Pop music. Christian Scripture and Human Resource Management provides a much-needed Christian faith-based perspective on human resources management written for both line and human resource managers using the framework of servant leadership, the mandated leadership approach used by Jesus.
Developing Christian Servant Leadership provides a Christian faith-based perspective on servant leader character development in the workplace and argues that leadership requires passionate and authentic biblical integration.
Servant Leader Human Resource Management provides a comprehensive conceptual framework based on a dignity enhancing stewardship model that integrates and balances mission achievement with motive, means and ends integrity from both a line manager and human resource department perspective.
Each topical chapter in this volume crystallizes the findings of a five-year study, under the auspices of the Population Health Program of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, that probed the links between social hierarchy, the "macroenvironmental" factors in illness patterns, the quality of the "microenvironmental," and other determinants of health. In its aggregate, this volume will prove essential to an understanding of the underlying public health issues for the next several decades.
This text presents a conceptual framework with case studies in
dryland development and management. The option of a rational and
ethical discourse for development that is beneficial for both the
environment and society is emphasized, avoiding extreme
environmentalism and human destructionism. This book has been
compiled with the purpose of giving guidance to Geography teachers
in both primary and secondary schools.
Monomolecular assemblies on substrates, now termed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films, have been studied for over half a century. Their development can be viewed in three stages. Following the pioneering work of Irving Langmuir and Katharine Blodgett in the late 1930s there was a brief flurry of activity just before and just after the Second World War. Many years later Hans Kuhn published his stimulating work on energy transfer. This German contribution to the field, made in the mid-1960s, can be regarded as laying the foundation for studies of artificial systems of cooperat ing molecules on solid substrates. However, the resurgence of activity in academic and industrial laboratories, which has resulted in four large international con ferences, would not have occurred but for British and French groups highlighting the possible applications of LB films in thefield of electronics. Many academic and industrial establishments involved in high technology are now active in or maintaining a watching brief on the field. Nevertheless this impor tant area of solid state science is still perhaps largely unfamiliar to many involved in materials or electronic device research. The richness of the variety of organic molecular materials suitable for LB film deposition offers enormous scope for those interested in their basic properties or their practical applications. LB films are now an integral part of the field of molecular electronics. It seems inevitable that they will play some role in replacing inorganic materials in certain areas of application."
In October 1931, Dick Tracy made his debut on the American newspaper pages. Through extensive research and interviews with Chester Gould (the creator of ""Dick Tracy""), his assistants, Dick Locher (the current artist), Mark Allan Collins (who scripted the stories for 15 years), and many others associated with the strip, Dick Tracy as a cultural icon emerges. The artists are fully revealed and Dick Tracy paraphernalia and the 1990 movie Dick Tracy are discussed. Dick Tracy's appearances in other media - books, comics, radio, movie serials, ""B"" movies, television dramas, and animated cartoons - are fully covered.
The purpose of this book, first published in 1996, is to explore the dimensions of the changing workforce, and examines the issues faced by non-native workers and their employers. This study aims to explore issues such as culture shock and cultural adaptation in the healthcare, fast food and hotel industries in Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. This title will be of interest to students of business studies and sociology. |
