The Patriarch - A Novel of Corruption and Terrorism, Love and Loss (Hardcover): G.N. Buffington The Patriarch - A Novel of Corruption and Terrorism, Love and Loss (Hardcover)
G.N. Buffington
R608 Discovery Miles 6 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Jacob Sellars, a New York City newspaper reporter, is assigned to cover the memorial services for oil tycoon Joshua Crane, whose corporation has an ambiguous history and suspicious ties to U.S. intelligence agencies. Sellars, who is trying to come to grips with his own troubled past, seizes the chance to write a freelance article about the Crane family, one of New England's most venerated.

In the process, Sellars develops an obsessive romance with Crane's granddaughter, a strident critic of the current administration's foreign policy in the Middle East. His investigations uncover the fact that Crane's company is being used as a front by the U.S. government for nefarious activities in oil-producing countries. Despite efforts to silence him, Sellars intends to publish a blockbuster story revealing the scheme. But he must first survive a beating by thuggish mercenaries, two horrifying terrorist attacks, and his own inner turmoil. Sellars's determination will be the deciding factor in whether he will escape with his life-and his heart-intact.

A masterful mix of high-level corruption, personal conflict, love and loss, "The Patriarch" is a vivid portrayal of the world for one American in the decade after the infamous terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Virgin Spring is the story of Nic Nichols, a rebellious teenager from the Midwest who has long had dreams of becoming a rodeo cowboy. A year before he is eligible for military service in World War II, he gets a lucky break: his parents send him to Arizona in a last-ditch effort to encourage him to finish high school. There, his passion is broncos rather than books, and his penchant for trouble continues to plague him as he tangles with rustlers, wrangling, and rodeos. But it is his friendship with an old vaquero and his romance with a young Apache woman that transform Nic into a man. Through the legend of Virgin Spring, he discovers the timelessness of love. This poignant tale evokes both the history and magic of the Southwest.

"In G. N. Buffington's engaging and strongly written "Virgin Spring," Nic turns into a cowboy before our eyes ."

-Richard Bradford, Author of the Classic, "Red Sky at Morning"

"An engaging novel that captures the spirit of a time and place over which World War II casts its long shadow. Highly recommended."

-Marc Simmons, Southwest Historian and Author of "Ranchers, Ramblers, and Renegades" and Others

R416 Discovery Miles 4 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Luke Martinez is a young lawyer of Apache and Hispanic descent working in Washington, D.C. His current assignment involves an investment program proposed by the United States and supported by the Colombian Government to redirect cartel drug profits and dry up the flow of drugs into the U.S. However, Luke finds it odd that the first investment selected is a gambling casino in New Mexico. His suspicions build as he sees signs of more nefarious motives.

In this Government-orchestrated scheme, a web of C.I.A. agents, military, and lawyers work undercover-some with hidden agendas-conspiring with cartel drug lords to use Native American casinos as their foil. The deeper Luke is immersed in the project, the more he is convinced that his Apache people are being ill-used. Trying to protect them from yet another form of exploitation, Luke learns too much and becomes a fugitive in his own country and the prey of vindictive drug dealers.

Caught in the lethal crossfire, Luke seeks the guidance of an Apache elder and resorts to the ancient warfare methods of Geronimo, hoping to survive long enough to expose the deception.
