Drama / Characters: 14 male, 4 female
Sacrificed to powers larger than himself, Woyzeck is one of
drama's first anti-heroes. He serves a German captain and makes
money by allowing a doctor to experiment on him, but his deeper
morality leads him to a tragic end.
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Written in 1836, Woyzeck is often considered to be the first truly
modern play. The story of a soldier driven mad by inhuman military
discipline and acute social deprivation is told in splintered
dialogue and jagged episodes, which are as shocking and telling
today as they were when first performed, almost a century after the
author's death, in Munich 1913. This edition contains introductory
commentary and notes by Laura Martin from the University of
Glasgow. METHUEN DRAMA STUDENT EDITIONS are expertly annotated
texts of a wide range of plays from the modern and classic
repertoires. A well as the complete text of the play itself, this
volume contains: * A chronology of the play and the playwright's
life and work * an introductory discussion of the social,
political, cultural and economic context in which the play was
originally conceived and created * a succinct overview of the
creation processes followed and subsequent performance history of
the piece * an analysis of, and commentary on, some of the major
themes and specific issues addressed by the text * a bibliography
of suggested primary and secondary materials for further study.

Drama Classics: The World's Great Plays at a Great Little Price One
of the most performed and influential plays in German theatre,
Georg Buchner's Woyzeck is a modern classic that remains
frighteningly relevant today. Franz Woyzeck, a lowly soldier
stationed in a provincial German town, is bullied by his superiors
and starved by the regiment's doctor in the name of scientific
experiment. His only pleasures in life are his lover Marie and
their innocent young son. But when Woyzeck learns that Marie has
been unfaithful with the regiment's handsome Drum Major, he murders
his lover in a fit of rage and hopelessness. Based on a real-life
murder trial that took place in Germany in the 1820s, Woyzeck was
written in 1837 but not staged until 1913. This English translation
by Gregory Motton is published in the Nick Hern Books Drama
Classics series. The edition includes an introduction by Kenneth
McLeish, a chronology and suggestions for further reading.
Georg Buchner is regularly considered the father of modern German
drama, and Woyzeck was his most influential work. Beneath the utter
simplicity of its basic story, there are complex themes of human
motivation, victimisation, guilt, class structure, and the meaning
and nature of existence. This edition incorporates the recent
research on the text, and provides full Introduction and Notes.
alemanes.
The life of Georg Buchner was short, intense, and tragic—and
extremely significant for the development of modern drama. His
three plays, Danton’s Death, Leonce and Lena, and Woyzeck, were
greatly ahead of their time in their penetrating dramatic and
psychological treatment. They served as an impetus for contemporary
schools of drama as different as the Theatre of the Absurd of
Ionesco and the Epic Theatre of Brecht.
lso presented in this only complete volume of Buchner in English
are his two powerful prose pieces, The Hessian Courier and his
short story, Lenz.
