What Is a Trade? Donald Fels and Signboard Painters of South India
presents sixteen large-scale paintings that explore trade and
globalization in India. Fels' conceptual starting point for this
exhibition was Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama's 1498 voyage to
Malabar, India, in search of a direct sea route for the spice
trade. What is a Trade? explores the historic and modern-day legacy
of that expedition more than 500 years later. In 2004 and 2005,
Fels traveled to Kerala (formerly Malabar), India, as a Fulbright
Senior Research Scholar, to work with local commercial signboard
painters on a body of work that examines globalization in India and
traces its roots to Vasco's voyage. Most of the signboard painters
had formerly worked as billboard painters -- until recently, all
billboards in India were hand-painted, but cheaper and more
efficient inkjet printers are making the painters obsolete. In
light of this trend, Fels and his collaborators created work in the
style of traditional hand-painted billboards and Bollywood
advertising. The bright colors and strong graphic narratives make
visually arresting statements about the historic and contemporary
effects of trade and globalization. Greg Bell is curator and
collection coordinator, 4Culture; Samuel K. Parker is associate
professor, Interdisciplinary arts and sciences, University of
Washington, Tacoma.
Latest volume in the leading forum for debate on aspects of
medieval warfare. This sixth volume continues the journal's
tradition of providing a wide range of scholarly studies, covering
topics as diverse as Carolingian war-horse breeding, late-medieval
Spanish methods of war-finance, the interface betweenmilitary
action and politics at the end of the Hundred Years War, and the
tactical methods of Cuman warriors. A key feature of the journal is
its commitment to fostering debate on the most significant issues
in medieval military history, and that tradition too continues with
the new volume, with a study of the relationships between communal
horsemen and footsoldiers in High Medieval Italy having significant
implications for the dispute over the importanceof infantry before
the fourteenth century. There is also an important article by
Richard Abels dealing with the contrasting `cultural determinist'
and `scientific' approaches to understanding the mindset of
medieval warriors, andthe existence (or not) of a `Western Way of
War'. CONTRIBUTORS: RICHARD ABELS, CARROLL GILLMOR, ALDO A. SETTIA,

ALLMAND.
Water The Bamboo is a metaphor for individual and team success.
When giant timber bamboo grows, it will rocket up an astonishing 90
feet in only 60 days, but not until at least three years of
watering. In 21 steps, this timely book helps individuals and teams
refocus on their core values and mission to achieve long-term
success.
Greg Belle believes that the ultimate purpose of life is to live,
learn, love, work, and above all, teach. With that purpose in mind,
Greg combines personal experiences with satirical commentary on the
social and political issues that surround us in America and across
the globe in an attempt to better the world, one reflection at a
time. Greg, who one day hopes he can jump off his own treadmill and
step outside his comfort zone, believes we are designed not to
inflict pain, but instead to help each other and, in the process,
preserve humanity. While offering his take on a wide range of
topics, Greg provides a poignant glimpse into his own challenging
journey through life with the intent of helping anyone who might be
"stuck" and uncertain of which way to head next. Growing Older on a
Treadmill shares reflections and anecdotes that encourage others to
live, learn, love, work and teach, no matter what their obstacles.
