This book presents tools for valuing and controlling corporate innovation. It combines a well-established theoretical framework with case studies at Siemens that illustrate the practice of valuing and controlling innovation and underline the strong link between theoretical concepts and practical application. Innovation is a key factor determining the success of companies and since corporate innovation consumes large quantities of resources, the issue of how best to distribute these resources among different projects is crucial. For an optimal resource allocation, companies need valuation tools to assess the benefits, costs and risks of competing projects. The energy sector is an example of a market that is strongly driven by innovation, and as such the book describes the processes and the potential of digitalizing product development and outlines the valuation process for a long-term innovation project in this sector - the development of the latest Siemens gas turbine.
Many large corporations delegate investment decision-making authority to their divisions. Because they are better informed, divisional managers should be able to make better decisions than corporate headquarters. However, they can use this informational advantage to pursue their own interests. The objective of this work is to analyze the problem of delegated decision-making within firms when investment projects are characterized by the possibility to make subsequent decisions after the initial investment decision has been made. By analyzing this question, the monograph combines and unifies two important lines of literature: on the one hand the literature on controlling investment decisions, on the other hand the investment valuation literature.

In this approach, student teams write and solve their own case study on a topic concerning current and future businesses. A case can thus be on their own startup or a strategic decision of existing companies. During the course, the students receive intensive coaching while selecting and developing the case topic by the course advisors as well as feedback by industry experts and executives for whom the case is actually a burning question. The authors present 17 cases covering strategic questions for startups and technology companies such as Deutsche Post, BMW, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Stadtwerke Munchen, Fielmann, adidas, Siemens, Caribou Biosciences, eon, Airbus, Unicredit and UBS.
