La genesi di questa visione pre 1600 e spiegata nei primi 6 capitoli, nei quali si analizzano le teorie che furono sviluppate e come queste teorie avessero un fondamento nell empirismo greco, per evolversi successivamente nelle teorie degli scienziati arabi e approdare al medio evo. Dopo di che gli scienziati e gli artisti si occuparono di luce, mentre i filosofi di colore. Con l Esperimentum Crucis Newton dimostro che la luce conteneva i colori primari, capitolo 7.
