Wordsworth and the Poetics of Air (Hardcover): Thomas H. Ford Wordsworth and the Poetics of Air (Hardcover)
Thomas H. Ford
R2,565 Discovery Miles 25 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Before the ideas we now define as Romanticism took hold the word 'atmosphere' meant only the physical stuff of air; afterwards, it could mean almost anything, from a historical mood or spirit to the character or style of an artwork. Thomas H. Ford traces this shift of meaning, which he sees as first occurring in the poetry of William Wordsworth. Gradually 'air' and 'atmosphere' took on the new status of metaphor as Wordsworth and other poets re-imagined poetry as a textual area of aerial communication - conveying the breath of a transitory moment to other times and places via the printed page. Reading Romantic poetry through this ecological and ecocritical lens Ford goes on to ask what the poems of the Romantic period mean for us in a new age of climate change, when the relationship between physical climates and cultural, political and literary atmospheres is once again being transformed.

How to Read a Poem - Seven Steps (Hardcover): Thomas H. Ford How to Read a Poem - Seven Steps (Hardcover)
Thomas H. Ford
R3,973 Discovery Miles 39 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How to Read a Poem is an introduction to creative reading, the art of coming up with something to say about a text. It presents a new method for learning and teaching the skills of poetic interpretation, providing its readers with practical steps they can use to construct perceptive, inventive readings of any poem they might read. The Introduction sets out the aims of the book and provides some basic operating principles for applying the seven steps. In each subsequent chapter, the step is introduced and explained, relevant points of interpretative theory and methodology are discussed and illustrated with multiple examples, and the step is put into practice in a final section. Through these final sections, step by step, the book develops an extended reading of a single poem, Letitia Landon's "Lines Written under a Picture of a Girl Burning a Love-Letter" from 1822. That reading is sustained across the whole arc of the book, providing a detailed worked example of how to read a poem. This accessible and enjoyable guide is the ideal introduction to anyone approaching the detailed study of poetry for the first time and offers valuable theoretical insights for those more experienced in the area.

Humans as Self-Constructing Living Systems - A Developmental Perspective on Behavior and Personality (Paperback): Donald H. Ford Humans as Self-Constructing Living Systems - A Developmental Perspective on Behavior and Personality (Paperback)
Donald H. Ford
R1,640 Discovery Miles 16 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1987, the purpose of this title was to develop a conceptual framework for understanding individual humans as complex, functional entities. It was felt that a sound developmental theory of human personality and behaviour would help synthesize existing scientific and clinical information into a coherent representation of a person as a functional unit, guide future research, and facilitate the work of the health and human services professions. The volume is aimed at a multidisciplinary-multiprofessional audience.

Martin E. Ford, Donald H. Ford
R1,097 Discovery Miles 10 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1987, the purpose of this companion volume to Donald Ford's (1987) Humans as Self-Constructing Living Systems: A Developmental Perspective on Personality and Behavior was to illustrate the potential utility of the Living Systems Framework (LSF) for stimulating new theoretical advances, for guiding research on human behavior and development, and for facilitating the work of the health and human service professions. Although not exactly a "how to" manual, it does provide many concrete examples of how and when the framework can be used to guide scholarly and professional activities. It also provides a concise overview of the framework itself that can help those who have read the theoretical volume refresh their memory, and assist those who have not, in understanding the basic concepts of the LSF and in deciding whether and how the framework might be useful to them.

Best known for his popular crime fiction, Boston novelist George V. Higgins (1939-1999) should stand among the top ranks of the American literary canon. In his 26 novels and dozens of short stories, Higgins chronicled the lives of Boston's Irish with his trademark hard-boiled dialogue, exploring the criminal underworld, American democracy, Boston politics, personal redemption and New England life in the tradition of Hawthorne and Thoreau. This intimate biography explores his turbulent life and career, including his working-class Irish Catholic roots, his two stormy marriages, his ambivalence toward the city of his birth, his passion for the limelight, and his drinking, which disrupted his family life and led to his early death at age 59. Discussions of Higgins' individual works and excerpts from his correspondence, writings, and thoughts on literature complete this revealing portrait.

There are few literary authors in whose work animals and other creatures play as prominent a role as they do in Franz Kafka's. Exploring multiple dimensions of Kafka's incorporation of nonhuman creatures into his writing, this volume is the first collection in English of essays devoted to illuminating this important and ubiquitous dimension of his work. The chapters here are written by an array of international scholars from various fields, and represent a diversity of interpretive approaches. In the course of exploring the roles played by nonhuman animals and other creatures in Kafka's writing, they help make sense of the literary and philosophical significance of his preoccupation with animals, and make clear that careful investigation of those creatures illuminates his core concerns: the nature of power; the inescapability of history and guilt; the dangers, promise, and strangeness of the alienation endemic to modern life; the human propensity for cruelty and oppression; the limits and conditions of humanity and the risks of dehumanization; the nature of authenticity; family life; Jewishness; and the nature of language and art. Thus the essays in this volume enrich our understanding of Kafka's work as a whole. Especially striking is the extent to which the articles collected here bring into focus the ways in which Kafka anticipated many of the recent developments in contemporary thinking about nonhuman animals.

Boards of Directors and the Privately Owned Firm - A Guide for Owners, Officers, and Directors (Hardcover, New): Roger H. Ford Boards of Directors and the Privately Owned Firm - A Guide for Owners, Officers, and Directors (Hardcover, New)
Roger H. Ford
R2,676 Discovery Miles 26 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a comprehensive and authoritative guide on when and how to build a working board of directors to serve as a tool to assist small, family, and entrepreneurial businesses. Mr. Ford has combined years of research with his extensive personal board room experiences to discuss all the key issues concerning the use and role of the board by privately owned businesses. He describes thoroughly the functions and contributions of boards from all angles, including situations where boards can be detrimental to company health and should be avoided. The book also provides detailed strategies for developing an effective board, from goal setting and recruiting, to training, educating, and managing directors. Special chapters also include information specifically for directors and case studies.

Following a brief introduction to the unique role and importance of privately owned businesses to the U.S. economy, the author reviews the literature and current theories on the advantages and disadvantages of boards of directors. He then offers guidelines for managers and business owners who are trying to decide if they would benefit from a working board. The following sections offer strategies for developing boards, choosing and recruiting directors, board management and organization, and control, cost, and overall board assessment. A chapter specifically for directors is also included. Finally, the author includes an executive summary of his study on the Inc. 500 boards, and three detailed case histories.

Women Who Sexually Abuse Children (Paperback): H. Ford Women Who Sexually Abuse Children (Paperback)
H. Ford
R1,390 Discovery Miles 13 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The sexual abuse of children by women is an area that has not, until now, been suitably acknowledged by professionals in the sexual offending field. Over recent years, the number of studies of such women has been growing steadily and this timely book provides an overall picture of our understanding of this issue to date and suggests where research efforts and practice developments could go next.

"Women Who Sexually Abuse Children" begins by considering the societal and professional understanding of sexual abuse by women and why, until recently, such behaviour in women was widely denied and minimised. The book moves on to discuss what is known about the sexually abusive behaviour of women and some of the potentially contributing factors to this behaviour. It also considers the particular effects on victims of being abused by a woman.

Although researchers are increasing their study of this group of abusers, the knowledge base remains small when compared with their male counterparts and, inevitably, many more questions still remain unanswered. Highlighting these gaps in our knowledge forms the focus of the next part of the book, before it continues to consider treatment needs and approaches with this group of offenders. The final section aims to broaden the reader's thinking around this issue with a discussion of two related topics: the female partners of sexually abusive males and adolescent female sexual abusers.

This book offers comprehensive and up-to-date coverage for clinicians, practitioners and researchers working in the field of child sexual abuse or those working with offenders.

Hellenica - A History of My Times - Books I-VII Complete (Paperback): Xenophon Hellenica - A History of My Times - Books I-VII Complete (Paperback)
Xenophon; Translated by Henry Graham Dakyns; Edited by James H. Ford
R505 R427 Discovery Miles 4 270 Save R78 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Hellenica is Xenophon's chronicle of the history of the Greeks, or the "Hellenes" from 411 to 359 BCE. It is a continuation of Thucydides' narrative, "History of the Peloponnesian War." This history covers the last seven years of the war, and its aftermath. It is one of the few surviving narratives from this period and is generally considered to be the most authoritative. The author Xenophon was born in Athens about 430BCE. It may be inferred from passages in the Hellenica that he fought at Arginusae (406), and that he was present at the return of Alcibiades (408), the trial of the Generals, and the overthrow of the Thirty. In 401, being invited by his friend Proxenus to join the expedition of the younger Cyrus against his brother, Artaxerxes II of Persia, he at once accepted the offer. Of the expedition itself, he has given a full and detailed account in his "Anabasis: The March Up Country," sometimes called "The Persian Expedition." At Coroneia (394) he fought with the Spartans against the Athenians and Thebans, for which his fellow citizens decreed his banishment. The Spartans provided a home for him at Scillus in Ellis until Sparta and Athens became allies whereupon he then made his home at Corinth. The year of his death is thought to be 355 BCE. This restored translation contains all 7 complete books of Xenophon's narrative, including an indexed Table of Contents listing page numbers for each year of the war. This edition is recommended for teachers and students of history, classical literature and languages. Excerpt from the Table of Contents All Rights Reserved Book I BCE 411: Thymochares arrived from Athens... 1 BCE 410: The Athenians escaped to Cardia... 2 BCE 409: The Athenians fortified Thoricus... 4 BCE 408: The temple of Athena set on fire... 8 BCE 407: Phamabazus passes the winter at Gordium... 10 BCE 406: Callicratidas replaces Lysander... 16

Beowulf in Old English and New English (Paperback): James H. Ford Beowulf in Old English and New English (Paperback)
James H. Ford; Translated by Francis B. Gummere
R502 R424 Discovery Miles 4 240 Save R78 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Beowulf In Old English And New English" contains, just as the title states, both versions as a Facing Page Translation. The original Beowulf manuscript is the oldest surviving document in what has come to be the English Language. It is also an exciting saga - full of action, adventure, heroic deeds, mystery and magic. It is magnificent literature.

The Old English version is a classic masterpiece of Western Literature which, due to the evolution of the language, has become very difficult for most readers. To facilitate understanding, to make it easier for the first time reader to appreciate the beauty of the original language, the New English translation by the renowned scholar Professor Francis B. Gummere is provided on alternate pages facing the original Old English text.

This arrangement makes it possible for the modern reader to immediately grasp the content of the saga and begin to see, on the facing page, the complex beauty of the original poem. It also gives the more advanced students an appreciation of the skill of the translator and the opportunity to extract new shades of meaning from the original text.

By way of introduction, this volume also contains a short summary of the saga. A table of contents, not part of the original, has also been included which, in itself, provides a series of guide posts to help follow the intricacies of the story.

Overcoming the difficulty of understanding the original text is the primary aim of this book. Those who are already familiar with Beowulf will surely agree that it is well worth the effort.
