Arguing against the postmodern claim that systematic theory is
unable to account for difference, "Difference in Time: A Critical
Theory of Culture" adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the
analysis of cultural judgement and social change. With music as her
model for theory, Hanrahan explores the role of time, the creation
of meaning, the identification of difference, and the basis for
judgements in cultural life, and in doing so provides a foundation
for the critique of cultural objects and practices that avoids both
the elitism of traditional aesthetics and the unwavering relativism
of so much contemporary cultural analysis. A broad-ranging and
deeply philosophical work building on the scholarship of the
Frankfurt School, "Difference in Time: A Critical Theory of Culture
"drives home the need for critique in the evaluation and revision
of the social knowledge and institutions of democratic civic
life.
In Hanrahan's analysis, the dualism of critique--that of
universal judgement and relative standpoint--is false when critique
is understood as a dynamic process in which both judgement and
standpoint are emergent and contingent. Differences are not given
or static but are articulated in time; therefore, both the
categories of critique and of social theory in general must be
temporalized. Hanrahan's musical model draws attention to the
fundamental temporality of social life and social structure, and
integrates that understanding into the structure of a new dynamic
in which difference is compatible with both system and structure.
Thus, Hanrahan demonstrates that it is possible to construct
critical categories that do not become orthodoxies.

This collection of original essays brings together contributors
from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss the implications of the
new media for the creation, delivery and assessment of English
studies. Strategies by which digital technologies can serve
professional, scholarly and pedagogical needs in a completely new
way are explored in the context of the role and mission of
humanities in the electronic age, student learning from a distance,
teaching e-lit, electronic tutorials and interdisciplinarity and
collaboration in a virtual environment. Including a useful Glossary
of Terms and lists of Further Reading and Key Individuals in the
field, this will be an essential volume for all teachers of English
Studies.
The "Precis du siecle de Louis XV" is Voltaire's vivid and engaging
account of his own era. In this volume, the War of the Austrian
Succession concludes with the victory of Maria Theresa, and France
and England continue to skirmish in the global Seven Years War.
Voltaire then turns his attention to French domestic politics and
the attempted assassination of the king by Damiens, in the context
of the struggle between the crown and the parlement. The text is
supported by extensive notes and variants from manuscript drafts
and significant print editions.
In 1766, while Voltaire was heavily involved in the Sirven case, he
was also busy defending his own reputation. His "Lettre pastorale a
Monsieur l'archeveque d'Auch" and "Satire contre Monsieur Lefranc
de Pompignan" perpetuated feuds against old enemies, while his
"Petit Commentaire" called for greater tolerance for the
philosophes in general. A biography of Henri IV that made no
reference to Voltaire's work as a historian impelled him to write
the scathing "Le President de Thou justifie". An unauthorised,
maliciously edited collection of his letters, which was potentially
damaging to the Sirven campaign, prompted the "Appel au public
contre un recueil de pretendues lettres". But Voltaire reserved his
harshest treatment for Rousseau and the Genevan pastor Jacob
Vernet. The "Lettre au docteur Jean-Jacques Pansophe", a litany of
apparent contradictions in Rousseau's works, appeared in England
during Rousseau's stay there. It was followed by the "Lettre de
Monsieur de Voltaire a Monsieur Hume", giving Voltaire's account of
Rousseau's life, and by "Notes" on that letter. Vernet was
ridiculed in the "Lettre curieuse de Monsieur Robert Covelle" and
the "Eloge de l'hypocrisie". The shorter verse presents a more
affable side to Voltaire as he flatters nobles, writers and younger
women.

Understanding what ‘family’ means – and how best to support
families – depends on challenging politicised assumptions that
frame ‘ordinary’ families in comparison to an imagined
problematic ‘other’. Learning from the perspectives of people
who were in care in childhood, this innovative book helps redefine
the concept of family. Linking two longitudinal studies involving
young adults in England, it reveals important new insights into the
diverse and dynamic complexity of family lives, identities and
practices in time – through childhood and beyond. Paving the way
for future policy and practice, this book makes an important
contribution to the theorisation of family in the 21st century.

In alignment with Indigenous Politics, an emerging sub-field of
Politics and IR, this book considers West Papuan Indigenous
nationhood. Combining Settler Colonial Studies and Critical
Indigenous Theory, the research opens up sovereignty as a political
category of analysis to reveal an embedded nation within Indonesia.
In June 2000 the Second Papuan People's Congress in Jayapura
rejected the basis on which West Papua had been incorporated into
Indonesia and resolved that the "people of Papua have been
sovereign as a nation and a state since 1 December 1962".
Indonesian president Wahid firmly opposed this resolution and state
officials posted historical narratives on the Australian Embassy
website that legitimated Indonesia's incorporation of the once
non-self-governing territory. A mapping and analysis of these
narratives demonstrate a settler colonial present within Southeast
Asia. It is argued that the US's appeasement of Indonesia's
takeover in the 1960s was based on the Great Power's concern to
promote its strategic and economic status in the region. "This is a
timely intervention that contributes to a growing debate on settler
colonialism as a mode of domination that characterises the global
present and involves locales not normally seen as settler colonial.
West Papua fits the bill". -Associate Professor Lorenzo Veracini,
author of Settler Colonial Studies: A Theoretical overview.
Margaret is doing everything in her power to forget home. And
Tokyo's exotic nightlife -- teeming with intoxicants, pornography,
and three-hour love hotels -- enables her to keep her demons at
bay. Working as an English specialist at Air-Pro Stewardess
Training Institute by day, and losing herself in a sex- and
drug-addled oblivion by night, Margaret represses memories of her
painful childhood and her older brother Frank's descent into
madness.
But Margaret's deliberate nihilism is thrown off balance as she
becomes increasingly haunted by images of a Western girl missing in
Tokyo. And when she becomes enamored of Kazu, a mysterious
gangster, their affair sparks a chain of events that could spell
tragedy for Margaret, in a city where it's all too easy to
disappear.

Originating from models of biological neural systems, artificial
neural networks (ANN) are the cornerstones of artificial
intelligence research. Catalyzed by the upsurge in computational
power and availability, and made widely accessible with the
co-evolution of software, algorithms, and methodologies, artificial
neural networks have had a profound impact in the elucidation of
complex biological, chemical, and environmental processes.
Artificial Neural Networks in Biological and Environmental Analysis
provides an in-depth and timely perspective on the fundamental,
technological, and applied aspects of computational neural
networks. Presenting the basic principles of neural networks
together with applications in the field, the book stimulates
communication and partnership among scientists in fields as diverse
as biology, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, and environmental
science. This interdisciplinary discourse is essential not only for
the success of independent and collaborative research and teaching
programs, but also for the continued interest in the use of neural
network tools in scientific inquiry. The book covers: A brief
history of computational neural network models in relation to brain
function Neural network operations, including neuron connectivity
and layer arrangement Basic building blocks of model design,
selection, and application from a statistical perspective
Neurofuzzy systems, neuro-genetic systems, and neuro-fuzzy-genetic
systems Function of neural networks in the study of complex natural
processes Scientists deal with very complicated systems, much of
the inner workings of which are frequently unknown to researchers.
Using only simple, linear mathematical methods, information that is
needed to truly understand natural systems may be lost. The
development of new algorithms to model such processes is needed,
and ANNs can play a major role. Balancing basic principles and
diverse applications, this text introduces newcomers to the field
and reviews recent developments of interest to active neural
network practitioners.
