Dieses Buch entstand in gemeinsamer Arbeit der Autoren an Wachstumsprob1emen des Gehirns. Einige Grundzuge der Theorie und verschiedene Ergebnisse wurden bereits fruher in mehreren Aufsatzen veroffentlicht. In den beiden Jahren 1969 und 1970 war der eine Autor (Wingert) am Deutschen Re- chenzentrum tatig. Er erweiterte dort die Theorie wesentlich und schrieb mehrere Computer-Programme, die Losungsmoglichkeiten fur ein breites Spektrum von Wachstumsprob1emen bieten. Die verschiedenen Stufen der Theorie wurden durch unsere Untersuchungen aus der quantitativen Neuroanatomie bestatigt. Auch unser alteres Material wurde fUr diese Studie mit den neuen Programmen ausgewertet und wird zum Teil hier erstma1s veroffentlicht. Die gro13zugige Bereitstellung der Anlagen des DeutschenRechenzentrums und die finanzielle Hilfe der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft machte unsere Arbeiten uber Wachstumsprob1eme moglich. IIn Laufe unserer Untersuchungen zeigte sich, daB gleiche oder ahnliche Probleme, wie wir sie in der Neuroanatomie fanden, auch in anderen Bereichen der Biologie und der Medizin auftreten. Daten aus anderen Disziplinen fanden wir im Schrifttum lei- der nur in einigen Fallen, da fast nie Origina1daten, sondern nur Mitte1werte ver- offentlicht wurden, die fur eine biometrische Wachstumsanalyse selten ausreichen. Infolge der aufwendigen Berechnungen beschrankten sich die bisherigen Publikatio- nen fast ausschlie13lich entweder auf die Angabe von Frei-Hand-Kurven oder auf punktuelle Untersuchungen. Hier sollen die Computer-Programme ein neues Instru- mentarium bieten.
