Als ich im April des J ahres 1904 nach den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika reiste, hatte ich mir die Aufgabe gestellt, zu unter- suchen, welche Fortschritte die amerikanische Industrie seit dem jiingsten Aufschwunge in der Fertigfabrikation und Weiter- verarbeitung ihrer Rohstoffe gemacht babe. Ist doch die Frage, inwieweit die Neue Welt ihre ungeheuren Schatze an Rohstoffen selbst zu hochwertigen Fertigfabrikaten verarbeiten wird und unter welchen Kosten dies geschehen kann, das vielleicht bedeutsamste Problem der ganzen, amerikanischen Gefahr". Schon nach kurzem Aufenthalt in Amerika erkannte ich, daB weder meine Zeit noch das zur Verfiigung stehende Material mir gestatten wiirde, jene Aufgabe in halbwegs befriedigender Weise zu bearbeiten. Dagegen schien es lohnend und moglich, die Produktions- und Absatzverhaltnisse eines bestimmten Gebietes der Industrie nach dieser Richtung hin zu untersuchen. Ich wahlte die Stahlindustrie. So viel tiber die amerikanische Stahlindustrie in letzter Zeit geschrieben worden ist - ich erinnere an die vortrefflichen Aufsatze von L. Glier -, eine systematische Be- handlung ihrer Produktions- und Absatzverhaltnisse ist bisher noch nicht vorhanden. Der groBte Teil der Literatur hat sich mit rein finanziellen Problemen - vor allem bei der Besprechung des Stahltrusts - beschaftigt und die Probleme der Produktions- und Absatzverhaltnisse nur als Nebenfragen behandelt. Das eng- lische Buch von Jeans wiederum ist in erster Linie vom Stand- punkte des Technikers aus geschrieben und kaum als Dokument na tionalokonomischer Wissenschaft anzusehen. Ein solches macht vor allem das Studium der geschichtlichen Entwicklung der Stahlindustrie notig.
