Ignaz Goldziher (1850-1921) verfasste bereits im Alter von zw lf Jahren seine erste Schrift ber den j dischen Glauben. Dank seiner vielseitigen Schulausbildung war er nicht nur anderen Religionen, sondern auch der Wissenschaft gegen ber aufgeschlossen. Besonders interessierte er sich f r den Islam, mit welchem er sich zeitweise stark identifizierte und so schlie lich einer der Mitbegr nder der Islamforschung wurde. In der j dischen Gemeinde brachte ihn diese liberale Einstellung schnell in Verruf; obwohl er Zeit seines Lebens Jude blieb, wurde er dennoch als Ketzer verschrien. Auch das vorliegende Werk ber den hebr ischen Mythos sorgte f r Kontroversen. Goldziher argumentiert sowohl gegen die allgemein verbreitete Theorie eines Urmythos', dem alle anderen Mythen entspringen, als auch gegen den Polytheismus als letzte Konsequenz der Religion. F r Goldziher ist stattdessen der Monotheismus die logische Weiterentwicklung des Polytheismus. Dieser wiederum findet seinen Ursprung in den Mythen, mit denen die Menschen seit Anbeginn ihrer Existenz versuchen, ihre Umwelt zu begreifen. Urspr nglich 1876 als erste Monografie Goldzihers ver ffentlicht, enth lt das Werk wesentliche Aspekte der Religionsanschauung, die der Autor in sp teren Schriften und Vortr gen fortgef hrt hat.
