Beyer's Just Universities discusses ways that U.S. Catholic institutions of higher education have embodied or failed to embody Catholic social teaching in their campus policies and practices. Beyer argues that the corporatization of the university has infected U.S. higher education with hyper-individualistic models and practices that hinder the ability of Catholic institutions to create an environment imbued with bedrock values and principles of Catholic Social Teaching such as respect for human rights, solidarity, and justice. Beyer problematizes corporatized higher education and shows how it has adversely affected efforts at Catholic schools to promote worker justice on campus; equitable admissions; financial aid; retention policies; diversity and inclusion policies that treat people of color, women, and LGBTQ persons as full community members; just investment; and stewardship of resources and the environment.

Ecological Microcosms is a seminal work which reviews the expanding field of enclosed ecosystem research, and relates the results and models of microcosm studies to general concepts in ecology. Microcosms are miniaturized pieces of our biosphere, ranging from streams and lakes to terraria, agroecosystems, and waste systems. The study of these simplified ecosystems is providing provocative insights into ecological principles as well as issues of environmental management and global stability. The authors have used the well-known thermodynamic approach of H.T. Odum and numerous computer simulations. The book also includes an evaluation of alternative mesocosm approaches for the support of humans in space, as well as appendices to aid in the teaching of environmental concepts using student-created microcosms. Ecological Microcosms will be of interest to ecologists, environmental engineers, policy makers and environmental managers, space scientists, and educators. Robert J. Odum is Graduate Research Professor of Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida, and was awarded, with Eugene Odum, the 1987 Crafoord Prize in the Biosciences.

Stoerungen im Stoffwechsel und Endokrinium sind in der operativen Medizin in der Regel Begleiterkrankungen, zu denen sich das Grundleiden addiert, das zur operativen Interven- tion fuhrt. Die Risiken durch endokrine oder metabolische Stoerungen in der pra-, intra- und postoperativen Phase interessieren den Anasthesisten und Operateur gleichermassen und erfordern meist eine konsiliarische Betreuung durch den internistischen Fachkollegen. Durch Stoerungen im Stoffwechsel und Endokrinium entstehen spezielle anasthesiologische Risiken, die die Auswahl der Anasthesiemittel und -methoden wesentlich beeinflussen. In der deutschsprachigen anasthesiologischen Literatur finden sich kaum ubersichtliche und praxis bezogene Darstellungen daruber, wie bei Patienten mit Stoerungen des Stoff- wechsels bzw. Endokriniums das Behandlungsrisiko durch pra-, intra- und postoperative Massnahmen vennindert werden kann. Die Teilnehmer des Workshops aus den verschiedensten medizinischen Disziplinen ver- suchten in wissenschaftlichen Beitragen und einer umfangreichen Diskussion Grundlagen und Empfehlungen zu folgenden Problemkreisen zu erarbeiten: Auswirkungen von Stoerungen des Stoffwechsels und Endokriniums auf Anasthesie und operatives Vorgehen. Auswirkungen von Anasthesie und operativen Eingriff auf diese Stoerungen und pra-, intra- und postoperative Massnahmen, die das Behandlungsrisiko auf ein moeglichst ge- ringes Ausmass reduzieren. Besonders sollten die praoperativen Massnahmen herausgestellt werden, welche der An- asthesist in Zusammenarbeit mit den internistischen Fachdisziplinen ergreifen muss, um die Ausgangslage der Patienten zu verbessern und um eine sichere UEberwachung wahrend der Anasthesie und des operativen Eingriffs zu gewahrleisten. Ferner sollten die Besonder- heiten der postoperativen Phase und die Moeglichkeiten ihrer Erkennung und Behandlung hervorgehoben werden.

Die Beatmung mit positiv-endexspiratorischem Druck (PEEP) ist derzeit die Methode der Wahl zur Behandlung der akuten respira- torischen Insuffizienz. Trotz der erwunschten gunstigen Wirkung auf die Lungen- funktion gelingt es nicht immer, die Gesamtsituation des Patienten zu verbessern. Als eine der Ursachen fur diese Resistenz gegenuber PEEP-Beatmung wurde schon fruhzeitig die Abnahme des Herz- minutenvolumens festgestellt und folgerichtig eine Volumensubsti- tution und Behandlung mit positiv inotropen Pharmaka empfohlen. Obwohl durch diese Behandlung sowie verschiedene Verfahren zur Ermittlung des sogenannten "best" oder "optimal PEEP" eine Verbesserung der Erfolge bei PEEP-Beatmung erreicht werden konnte, sind die Gesamtveranderungen, die durch PEEP-Beatmung induziert werden, bislang nicht bekannt. Insbesondere fehlen syste- matische Studien uber die Verteilung des Herzrninutenvolumens auf die einzelnen Organe, d.h. die regionale Organdurchblutung sowie Untersuchungen uber die lokale Versorgung der Gewebe mit Sauerstoff. Die simultane Messung und Registrierung der wesentlichen Parameter von Lungenfunktion, Hamodynamik, lokaler Sauerstoff- versorgung sowie Organfunktion und Stoffwechsel erfordert einen ausserordentlichen personellen und technischen Aufwand. Am Institut fur Chirurgische Forschung der Universitat Mun- chen standen die Methoden zur Analyse von Veranderungen der Makro- und Mikrohamodynamik, des Gasaustausches und der Ge- websoxygenierung zur Verfugung. Es waren daher Untersuchungen uber die Auswirkungen einer graduierten PEEP-Beatmung sowohl bei normaler Lunge als auch am Modell der akuten respiratorischen Insuffizienz moeglich. Eine weitere Voraussetzung zur Durchftih- rung einer derart umfangreichen Studie ist eine mit den Unter- suchungstechniken vertraute Arbeitsgruppe. Unseren Kollegen, Dr. med.
