R355 Discovery Miles 3 550 Ships in 20 - 25 working days

Collection of seven classic films. 'The Guns of Navarone' (1961), set in 1943, follows a group of mismatched soldiers who are sent to sabotage two powerful Nazi guns situated on a Greek island. If their mission fails, the guns will wipe out the 2,000 British soldiers who are attempting to evacuate civilians further down the coast. The mission is led by the dispassionate Captain Mallory (Gregory Peck) whose clinical approach does not find favour with explosives expert Corporal Miller (David Niven). Meanwhile, the group's Greek patriot guide Andrea Stavros (Anthony Quinn) is nursing a grudge against Mallory for an old injustice. 'The Bridge On the River Kwai' (1957), based on the novel by Pierre Boulle, sees a group of prisoners of war forced to build a bridge in Burma for the Japanese, with Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) the appointed leader of the men. When the Japanese commander Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa) orders the construction, Nicholson agrees on the basis that the project will keep his men occupied and give them an opportunity to prove, through the quality of their work, the superiority of British engineering. However, as the bridge progresses and the prisoners strive to show their craftsmanship, Nicholson appears to lose sight of the fact that the ultimate object of the bridge is to help the Japanese win the war. 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1962) is David Lean's Oscar-winning biopic starring Peter O'Toole as T.E. Lawrence, the Oxford-educated British army officer who aided the Arabs in their revolt against the Turks. Teaming up with Sherif Ali (Omar Sharif), Lawrence crosses an inhospitable desert in order to join two separate Arab tribes together as a single fighting force. Aiming to achieve Arab sovereignty, he wins a series of military victories but always keeps his eye on the larger picture, doing his best to prevent the subjection of the Arabs to British colonial rule. Charlton Heston stars in the title role of 'Major Dundee' (1965), an epic Western about a Major who joins forces with his sworn enemy to destroy a band of Apaches. When Major Amos Dundee is sent to a prisoner of war camp after making an error at the Battle of Gettysburg, he uses the opportunity to gather a small, but ruthless, army to lead on a mission of revenge. Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin star in 'The Professionals' (1966), following four soldiers of fortune who are hired by a wealthy Texan oil baron (Ralph Bellamy) to rescue his kidnapped wife (Claudia Cardinale) who has been taken across the Mexican border by a band of mercenaries. The four men, each regarded as a specialist in his field - expert marksman and tracker Jake (Woody Strode), explosives master Dolworth (Lancaster), horse handler Ehrengard (Robert Ryan) and Fardan (Marvin) whose skills lie in tactics and weaponry - make their way across the treacherous landscape to retrieve the beautiful kidnappee, but along the way discover all is not what it seems. 'Gandhi' (1982), Richard Attenborough's Academy Award-winning epic, follows the extraordinary life of Mahatma Gandhi (Ben Kingsley) from his beginnings as a young Indian lawyer to his triumph as a revolutionary. After being thrown off a South African train just for being Indian, Gandhi realised just how prejudiced people were about his race and decided to do something about it. Taking the matter into his own hands, Gandhi arranges non-violent protests in the hope of getting the attention of the South African government. Finally, Fred Zinnemann's classic drama 'From Here to Eternity' (1953) follows the events of the night before the fateful attack on Pearl Harbor. Private Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) is a new recruit at the military base, and has already fallen foul of his superiors due to his refusal to box on the company team. Given the worst duties as a result, Prewitt is befriended by Angelo Maggio (Frank Sinatra), a young soldier who is himself persecuted by the Italian-hating Sergeant Fatso (Ernest Borgnine). Meanwhile, Sergeant Warden (Lancaster), Prewitt's superior, treads on dangerous ground when he allows himself to get caught up in an affair with an officer's wife (Deborah Kerr).

R504 Discovery Miles 5 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Collection of ten classic films from the award-winning British director. In 'The Sound Barrier' (1952), Ralph Richardson stars as an aircraft manufacturer whose all-consuming passion with making the ultimate supersonic jet kills both his son and son-in-law and almost destroys him and the rest of his family. In 'Hobson's Choice' (1953), Lancashire bootmaker Henry Horatio Hobson (Charles Laughton) keeps a tight rein on his three daughters until his eldest, Maggie (Brenda De Banzie), marries his assistant, Willie Mossop (John Mills), and sets him up in his own bootmaking firm. To Hobson's consternation, Willie has soon become his father-in-law's main business rival. In 'Blithe Spirit' (1945), cynical writer, Charles Condomine (Rex Harrison), asks a medium (Margaret Rutherford) to hold a seance in his house so he can collect material for his latest book. No one is more surprised than the medium when she inadvertently conjures up the ghost of Condomine's first wife (Kay Hammond). The ghost refuses to go away, preferring to taunt her less sophisticated replacement (Constance Cummings). In 'Brief Encounter' (1945), a respectable, happily married doctor (Trevor Howard) comes to the aid of an equally upstanding housewife (Celia Johnson) when a passing train blows cinder into her eye. Thus begins a tentative romance, conducted in the tearooms and railway cafe of a small English town. In 'Great Expectations' (1946), orphan, Pip (Anthony Wager), befriends an escaped convict before being elevated to higher circles as the companion of Miss Havisham and her niece, Estella (Jean Simmons), with whom the boy quickly falls in love. When the adult Pip (Mills) discovers a mysterious benefactor has paved the way for him to become a gentleman, he assumes Miss Havisham is responsible. In 'Oliver Twist' (1948), Oliver (John Howard Davis) is a young orphan boy who is expelled from the workhouse run by Mr Bumbel (Francis L. Sullivan). After becoming an apprentice to an undertaker, Oliver decides to run away to London, only to meet the Artful Dodger (Anthony Newley) and fall amongst his gang of thieves, led by the scheming Fagin (Alec Guinness). In 'Madeleine' (1949), Madeleine (Ann Todd) is the eldest daughter in a respectable Victorian Glasgow family. She begins an affair with Frenchman, Emile L'Anglier (Ivan Desny), without her father's knowledge. Meanwhile, Madeleine's father insists on her seeing various suitors. When Madeleine becomes engaged to William Minnoch (Norman Wooland), Emile threatens to reveal their relationship. 'The Passionate Friends' (1944) is an episodic tale of an average working class family in the interwar years. The story traces the melodrama caused by illicit affairs, family bereavement, the first ripples of women's liberation and political instability in the country during the General Strike. It highlights the fact that these internal wranglings are all happening in one house in an average street, and that each average house has its own dramatic stories to tell. Finally, 'In Which We Serve' (1942) is a World War II drama about a destroyer, told through flashbacks and the reminiscences of the surviving crew after their beloved ship is torpedoed.

In 'Frieda' (1947), directed by Basil Dearden, an English pilot marries the German girl who helped him escape a prison camp and the pair move to Britain, where the arrival of the girl's brother causes a stir. Classic British war film based on the novel by Pierre Boulle in which a group of POWs are forced to build a bridge in Burma for the Japanese. Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) is the appointed leader of the men interned in the camp. When the Japanese commander, Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa), orders his captives to build a bridge across the river Kwai, Nicholson agrees on the basis that the project will keep his men occupied and give them an opportunity to prove, through the quality of their work, the superiority of British engineering. However, as the bridge progresses and the POWs strive to show their craftsmanship, Nicholson appears to lose sight of the fact that the ultimate object of the bridge is to help the Japanese win the war. The impending arrival of a British commando team, sent to destroy the bridge, looks set to provide a stern test of where the true loyalties of the increasingly obsessive Nicholson lie.

Sentimental Education - Schooling, Popular Culture and the Regulation of Liberty (Paperback): James Donald Sentimental Education - Schooling, Popular Culture and the Regulation of Liberty (Paperback)
James Donald
R439 Discovery Miles 4 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What sort of institution is education? In this iconoclastic study, James Donald restores the school to its proper place at the heart of post-Enlightenment culture and politics. He traces the emergence of education as an apparatus designed -- forlornly -- to shape the souls of citizens. He also draws illuminating analogies between education and broadcasting, showing how both conjure up publics and structure the everyday lives of individuals. To balance this focus on the institution of cultural norms, Donald emphasizes the dynamics of fantasy and desire in their negotiation. He therefore juxtaposes the normative practices of education and broadcasting against more transgressive forms of popular culture: pornography, racist thrillers like Fu Manchu, vampire films, and what he calls the vulgar sublime. Finally, drawing on postmodern debates about community and democracy, he sketches a context for reforms in broadcasting and presents a provocative alternative to orthodox progressive ideas about education from the primary school to the university.

R426 Discovery Miles 4 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A collection of five Hammer horror films from the 1960s. In 'The Nanny' (1965), a nanny (Bette Davis) is hired to look after a ten-year-old who has just returned from a mental institution. The boy's mother has just been poisoned and he believes the nanny is to blame. When his aunt arrives and hears the boy's accusations she sides with the nanny, claiming the boy is making it all up. 'Dracula: Prince of Darkness' (1965) is the sequel to the 1958 film 'Dracula'. Four English tourists are holidaying in the Carpathians when they meet the unconventional Father Sandor (Andrew Keir) at an inn. He warns them to avoid the local castle if they value their lives, but the next day the quartet find themselves stranded in the mountains after their driver abandons them. When a driverless carriage arrives they board it, intending to travel to the nearest village. However, the carriage instead takes them to the very castle which Sandor warned them against, where they are welcomed by Klove (Philip Latham), sinister manservant of Count Dracula (Christopher Lee). 'Quatermass and the Pit' (1967) is the Hammer version of the popular TV series. When prehistoric skulls and the remains of an alien spaceship are discovered in the bowels of London's Underground during an excavation, a weird and powerful force is unleashed, and Professor Quatermass (Keir) is called in to investigate. 'Frankenstein Created Woman' is the sequel to the 1964 film 'Evil of Frankenstein'. The Baron (Peter Cushing) has taken up residence with well-meaning inebriate Doctor Hertz (Thorley Walters). When Hertz successfully revives Frankenstein after freezing his body, the latter deduces that the human spirit does not leave the body after death, and can therefore be transmuted into another form. He gets the chance to prove his theory when his young assistant, Hans, is hanged for a murder he did not commit, and Hans' disfigured lover, Christina, commits suicide in despair. After performing cosmetic surgery on Christina, the two scientists successfully transfer Hans's spirit into her body. However, Hans now sets out to take revenge on those responsible for his death. Finally, in 'The Devil Rides Out' (1967), the Duc de Richleau (Lee) is concerned by the disappearance of his young friend Simon (Patrick Mower) from the social scene. Accompanied by former army colleague Rex (Leon Greene), de Richleau discovers that Simon has joined a group of Devil worshippers, led by the evil Mocata (Charles Gray). Through de Richleau's attempts to wrest Simon from Mocata's influence, Rex becomes romantically involved with Tanith, another member of the cult.
